Complex Question :) Anyone can help?

Postby luvdodo » Sat Oct 22, 2011 1:05 pm

Okay folks, here my issue -

Have the following cards -

a) Bank of America Visa, 11 years, not used
b) Chase Master Rewards, 8 years, balance 30K points, used where Amex is not accept
c) Amex Starwood, 8 years, most used card, balance of 150K points

With SPG, the points for hotel booking is increasing and Sheraton's quality has been very bad in the last few visits. I was thinking more of Marriott maybe? thoughts? Else, can I keep the amex and just change from SPG to some other program?

Since I don't use the BoA and Chase cards, I was planning on replacing them for some better cards.

I have been told this will impact my credit history especially because the BoA card is the only one that has the longest history. Suggestions?

Thanks much!

this is not what I would call a complex question. first of all do you travel on business? since you have the starwood preferred guest I'm going to guess yes?

assuming you travel on business, are you looking to replace cards you use for business, cards you use for personal use or both?

for cash back I love the Discover card you get 1/4% - 1% but at times of year they have rotating categories you get 5% on home improvements, drug stores, gas stations from now to the end of the year it's 5% back on clothing stores, department stores and restaurants how ever there's a 300 dollar cap so you can't go over up to 300 in the categories.

If you are interested in miles I would suggest the capital 1 venture card. you get 1.25 miles per 1 dollar spent, no foreign transaction fee, room upgrades at hotels, baggage protection and a concierge, they help you make dinner or lunch reservations, help with gift ideas, sporting events. want to go to a game and can't get tickets in your area, call them up and they will try to get the game you want to go to.

Citi has some nice cards, the select, dividend and forward I think offer cash back and 1 of them offers 5% back in rotating categories like the chase freedom and Discover more.

as far as cards you use for business assuming you travel would you be interested in the green card I'm sure you know there's an annual fee of 95 bucks. to be honest your card is more of an executive card. However if you are going to switch from the Sheraton to the Marriott you might want to get a Marriott card. you can keep your american express card but you can't keep the same account. let's say you want the Delta gold or Jet blue, you would have to re-apply but you would keep your same membership date.

citibank has a nice card with american airlines, not sure what the miles per dollar is but redemption is american airlines only.
