Improving credit score by getting an overseas Amex card?

Postby Imdramayu » Thu Sep 08, 2011 2:47 pm

Would getting a foreign Amex card help my credit history score? I am a Canadian citizen but work for a foreign company overseas so it is difficult to get a Canadian credit card. The applications always ask for "Company name", "Company address", etc. (BTW, is there any way to get around that and still be honest?) So, I've been thinking of getting a foreign Amex card. Does the credit history built up with the foreign Amex card transfer back to the US or Canada (depending on where I eventually live)? The cheapest Amex Card available in my country is $60/year membership fee. Is this fee worth building up a credit history? Also, do some Amex card contribute to credit history differently?

How about checking with your company to see if they have a US or Canadian Office and use that address? Most US applications only ask for the name of your employer and not the address. Overseas is a different story and this is because the banking laws/rules and country requirements are different.
Unfortunately some of the above rules also apply to credit reporting and the standards are different. I don't want my information readily available to banks in Canada or Dubai (Different Privacy rules) so nearly all this information can only be provided to legitimate business in the USA. What you do in Canada stays in Canada and what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
