putting 'member since' on cards

Postby Cucumber » Sun Nov 09, 2008 3:32 am

Have you noticed how Amex and Discover both put 'member since' and then the year you first got their card below. None of the Visa or Mastercards do that. Why is that only these two do it? My Bank of America says 'member since' and the year but my Visa card from them doesn't.

It's all about customer loyalty. American Express has been good with cardholders feeling a strong loyalty to their brand and from being a member. By putting the "member since..." it strengthens it.

As far as Discover goes I have a card from them but didn't notice it until you pointed it out. They must be trying to position themselves like American Express.

Actually it was American Express who started the "Member since...." part. In the late 90's more and more card issuing banks started adding it to their cards. They may not call it Member since but you may see it as Cardholder since.

Amex always comes up with the good ideas like gold and platinum and then the others always come along and try to copy them. Did you see Best Buy now has a black card.... LOL what a joke!

However you look at it, Amex still receives the highest respect in the industry. No matter what card they come up with it !!

I have never seen a Visa or MasterCard featuring a "member since" or similar phrase.

With American Express the "member since" applies to how long you've had your first account with American Express. It does not apply to how long you've had that card.
