Is it surprising I got approved for a citi platinum select card?

Postby andy1088 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 8:27 pm

Hi all,

I'm new to the boards and relatively new to credit in general. I just got approved for a $1,000 credit line on the Citi platinum select card. I know this card doesn't provide any rewards but the 0% interest and the beginning is amazing, and I'm shocked I got approved. I have two cards right now a cap one secured card with a $300 credit line that I got in March (got bumped up $100 recently) and a newcomer rewards card got in April (also cap one started at $300 bumped up to $500 recently).

I've never missed a payment, but thought my scores (around 630-640) would deter Citi away. I applied because my grandfather had this card when he was alive and always liked the service you got. Glad I did now. :)
My cards
Chase-Sapphire-$5,000 Freedom-$3,000, Amazon rewards-$700, Slate-$600
Citi- Diamond Preferred-$4,000, Thank you-$2,500
Discover IT-$2,500
Bank of America cash rewards-$2,000
Capital one newcomer rewards-$500

I have been working on my credit since my bankruptcy 4 years ago.
I have a Walmart card for 1,200.00 when opened and a few increases to 1,900.00
I got message on Walmart site that I quilify for upgrade to Walmart Discover card.
I accepted and got approved for 4,000.00.
I also applied for Sam's club Dicover card approved for 3,000.00.
I also have other cards, And my fico score is showing at 755.
I wanted to get a Diamond Preferred card from Citi bank.
I applied online and was denied right away, was feeling sad.
I waited throught out the day and called at night.
The recorder said I was denied due to a Bankruptcy.
I could not believe they would still look at that after 4 years.
I guess if you have a bankruptcy, you better wait longer.
Citi pulled experian and I live in Southern California.
I wish they would have pulled credit bureau as bankruptcy doesn't show.

Sorry to hear you were denied because of bankruptcy. Some will hold that against you as long as it's on your report. If they (the creditor you are apping for) were included in the bankruptcy, they may even hold it against you even after it's off your report.

There's a reason for that though. Bankruptcy is a drastic action... if it was just a matter of filing for bankruptcy and then everyone would forget and forgive a year or two later, then everyone (okay not everyone but a lot of people) would be doing it.
In my Wallet:

That bankruptcy will be on your report for another three years. Sorry to be harsh but you have no one to blame but yourself. Frankly, I can't believe you were approved for two Discover cards with CLs that high with the bankruptcy on your report.

 • I got my preowned car on august 2010 with wells fargo, i'm always paying on time my car payments, my outstanding auto loan is $9000.
 • I just have a balance of $500 in my capital one mastercard (credit line of $2000).
 • I also have an orchard bank with $1100 no balance and direct rewards discover by hsbc with $300, they never increase my credit line.
I just applied ONLINE for a Citibank Platinum Select Mastercard on Sunday the 27th or March. I got a message saying thank you for applying for Citicards and we need further processing..... In the past around 6 months ago I applied for another credit card with citibank and they rejected me so I don't know if it's going to be the same this time.

My credit score in the 3 credit bureau is 715.

Can somebody tell me if I meet Citibank's credit card requirements and if I will get approved? Thanks

Two things, to answer the OP's questions. First, you say your credit score in the 3 credit bureau is 715. What's the source of that score? And which one of the 3 was it?

Second, since it was not an outright denial (we need further processing), that can simply mean that they need to verify some information. Call them. It might just be that they need to verify address or income. If it didn't say denial or letter in 7-10 days, or 30 days, that's usually a good sign, but with everything credit, YMMV.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

FYI, the post you're responding to is 3 years old and the OP has one post on here so he's likely not been back here in years.
