Do you have to be a student to get a student credit card?

Postby VApennypincher » Sun Feb 06, 2011 1:35 am

This may seem like an unusual question but do you have to be a student to get a student credit card or can anyone apply get approved even if you are not in college? I am younger, 20, have some credit history but not a lot. I have a credit card with a $700 limit that I have had for over a year but in December when I applied for another I was denied because my credit history was new. I hear that student credit cards have easier requirements to meet and having no credit history is not a problem. But I'm not a student. Will it still work for me?

I believe you do have to be a student to get a student credit card. The applications ask for school information and I don't think that's an optional field. I checked right now and some even ask for the .edu school email address on the application.

Update for fall 2013: If you want the easiest student card to get approved for, try this one:
Disclosure: I am a moderator/paid staff of this site, which does have advertising relationships with some credit cards that are discussed and linked to. Regardless, anything I say is my honest opinion.

Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Chase Sapphire Preferred

After posting this I clicked on a student card application and on it was a question if I am a student and I could tick off yes or no. This kind of goes against your response that only students can get a student credit card.

What happens if I submit the application and click no for being a student?

Students are not supposed to be able to get credit cards without income but it is happening. It would not surprise me the least bit if it turned out that non students could get them too. The goal of the credit card is to get anyone with a pulse to apply and become their debt slave. The ability to pay doesn't concern them since it is better to have you as a rat on a wheel.
Cards: NONE!

Well, technically there shouldn't be anything wrong when it is a joint-account with a parent.
