August 2017 Garden/App Planning Club

Postby AMEXPlatino86 » Wed Aug 09, 2017 5:40 pm

Geez I think this is the longest I've seen without people putting up a monthly garden/app post so I guess I'll start it. Nothing much has changed in my credit world but that was because it's been at least 2 years since I really upped for a card. Nothing per se really interested me but I did want to start looking for another small business card.

But now for some reason I really have that itch and a couple of cards are catching my interest. When I go on vacation, I either stay at Marriott or Hilton (sometimes a Starwood if I'm feeling fancy). I already have the Marriott Premier but now want the AMEX Hilton but am not sure if I want the regular or Surpass. The last thing I need is another AF since I already pay 3 but that 12x/6x/3 combo is looking mighty sweet. Plus I want to wait for the special offer to app for that.

Also in the market for another business card. I need one with no FTF but already have the regular Platinum so don't feel I need the Business one (maybe?). If I do, one of my AF has to go and I'm not sure which one or maybe be forced to pay 5 of them. Will probably need advice.

What's new in your credit world???
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score

EX: 776

Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

A quiet thread, but already in existence.

I recall reading about some big changes in the Hilton co-branded world, either Citi or Amex is becoming exclusive--I don't recall the details.

Amex will be the exclusive partner. There was a window after the announcement where it was still possible to app for the Citi cards, but they are no longer (at least easily found) on the Citi website. I don't know what will happen to the Citi cards.

I'll reply in this one. Still gardening. Happy with all of my current cards except AmEx, whose offerings I find underwhelming. OTOH, no AF on my current BlueSky card, so I just sock-drawered it.

I don't think I'll renew my CSP in Jan 2018.

I may transfer the points out (probably dividing them between United and Hyatt) and PC to Freedom Unlimited.

1. My revenue travel spend will likely be limited in general. Revenue flights and hotels will go on Prestige or their respective cobrand cards. "Other" travel like trains and taxis won't be too expensive.
2. I independently get special customer service from Chase.
3. If I decide I want CSP, I can always PC FU back or get a new CSP/CSR card and new bonus. It's been two years and a few months since I got the CSP bonus, and I'm not that far away from 5/24.
4. Although it's been my reason for keeping the card, I don't really rent cars often enough that the primary insurance is such a great thing. I have to investigate further, but I think I can enroll my Platinum with Amex to just pay a flat $19.95 or $24.95 fee each time I rent a car for up to 42 days. Since getting CSP I've paid $190 in AFs but only rented a car four times.

Anything I might be missing or misunderstanding?

My sock drawer is for socks, so I closed Discover (don't really miss it), Commence (tried four times to PC, but no-go and Barclay isn't offering anything interesting for me), and PenFed Plat (which was a joke in itself).

Couldn't PC my PenFed Plat so opened the Power Cash for 2% back since I already have a checking acct with them and transferred my CL. Interestingly enough, the whole limit was transferred unlike other banks where you have to keep at least $500 on the card even to close it.

Looking forward to BofA's new travel card, mainly to reap the seemingly simple promo and close it. From what I've read though, it sounds like an interesting card, albeit a CSP copy.

Wondering how long my Better Balance card will last before BofA changes it. It'll be like Sallie Mae all over again!

Lastly, FNBO's Travelite has become my Zync. I'm still chasing that unicorn.

Sounds pretty good to me.

When I called to PC/Canx my CSP a few years ago, they ran a few scenarios and projections for me to help me determine it's value. In the end I decided to PC to Freedom. I'll be making a similar call next year for my CSR, this time I have a more focused spend plan though so I will be on the path to keep it.

Speaking of which, I am pretty upset I haven't been checking the Chase portal--they offer 4x on Crutchfield, I just spent $400 there :beat:
