April 2017 Garden Club/Cult

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Mon Apr 03, 2017 5:28 pm

Anyone apping?

SPG 35k is about to expire. Platinum now has a $550 AF but a 60k bonus. I think CSR is at 50k for everyone now.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

No apps.

Thinking if I am going to apply for CSR (and maybe Ink Preferred at the same time) in or around July. It was what I had planned (mostly) since they both came out, but I'm not positive if I still want to or not. I'd likely close Ritz after CSR approval as well.

Not really sure what to do.

Any thoughts?
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I'm guessing you'd downgrade your CSP to an FU? Having a bunch of URs pouring in is good.

The future of Marriott/Ritz/SPG points and elite status is a mystery, but I'd guess RC is more likely to keep elite status than Platinum, if that's worth a lot to you.

Slightly unrelated: Marriott is at 100k/$5k/3 months. The bonus and required spend structure aren't quite as attractive as 35k SPG, but it does come with the renewal night.

I think I've ruled out Marriott until I know what's happening which won't be for a while.

The main appeal of the CSR to me is the 50% bonus. I get a considerable amount of points monthly from the Ink Plus alone and even without the $300 travel credit the added value of the 50% bonus over the 25% bonus makes the additional AF easily worth it for me. I suppose my plan will be to wait for the 100K to come back as I'm technically not in a rush, but 50K is really still worth it because of the above described situation. The Ink Preferred isn't really necessary so I'm more torn about that than the CSR. I just don't know how long they will leave the Ink Plus earning as it does without converting it.

And yes, I'll likely PC the CSP to the FU. I'll miss the card design...

Anyone closing or seeking retention on cards?

I've been phasing out my use of Prestige in anticipation of closing it in a month:
-The rest of the $250 air credit should post on my next statement.
-I have only trivial purchases that need to complete price rewinds. I'm using the Costco card for new ones.
-When my current statement closes I'll have like $10 or $15 of points remaining, which I can burn on Amazon.
-I have a few things under extended warranty...but mostly just stuff that, if it broke, probably wouldn't be covered for reasons of normal wear and tear. I'm not sure if extended warranties survive through PCs. If they do, I might PC to Double Cash. Does anyone know?

The travel delay insurance I'd miss...but other cards aren't so much worse that I'd want to pay $450-$250=$200 just for the premium version of this benefit.

The $8k CL is nice, and I may take a HP to move it to Costco...or just go for one of the Citi SP CLIs I've heard others talk about.

I've been getting SP CLIs on both cards every six months. On the DC for like two or three years...

I got a $1.5k SP CLI on Costco to go from $4.6k to $6.1k. It's a nice little bump, but I'll probably take the HP to move the $8k.

I've started to use the card more, and before calling I was at 50% mid-month utilization on it...so it's a case where a bit of CL padding would be nice.

Yea. If you're spending that kind of money on the card, you could use 15K or so.

Taking the "big AF with a big travel credit" concept to a new extreme, in May US Bank will launch a $400 AF card with a $325 travel credit. It's definitely targeting CSR (good earn rates, good bonus, limited perks).

It looks like a pretty good card...until the nerfs begin!
