Any point in having both Amex Plat and Sapphire Reserve?

Postby Lalalandra » Mon Feb 27, 2017 1:41 pm

My fiance got the Chase Sapphire Reserve card several months ago, and he wants to get the American Express Platinum too. In what scenarios might that be good? I don't get why anyone would want two expensive cards like that when they both have such similar benefits but maybe there's something I'm not seeing? Fiance is saying the Platinum is better for making big purchases since you have no limit.

The cards actually have some big differences. Platinum has good rewards on airfare, but apart from that is more about travel perks (hotel room upgrades and airport lounge access) and extended warranties. Sapphire Reserve is more about rewards on dining and travel (all kinds of travel, not just airfare), and travel delay insurance. Platinum is better suited than Sapphire Reserve to very heavy spending (tens of thousands per month).

A scenario for having both would be if you travel a lot and can use the perks.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Another argument for the Platinum would be lounge access. If your home airport has a Centurion lounge, or Sky Clubs (and I believe if you're flying Delta that day), you get in both. The Platinum only gives the $200 credit for non-ticket airline fees such as checked bags, so make sure you can fully utilize that too to bring the AF down. To test the waters, you can always try the Schwab Platinum as it has no AF the first year, but keep in mind it doesn't have a sign-up bonus either.

Maybe you're thinking of the Ameriprise card? Schwab has a 40k MR bonus. Having assets at Schwab can in effect reduce, but not eliminate, each year's AF via the loyalty credit.

Glad I asked! Looks like there are some things I didn't think about.
