Your favorite card

Postby Cizz » Wed Feb 22, 2017 12:59 am

What is your favorite card and why? I'm a credit newbie, so I'm curious.

So far, my Discover has saved my butt, and I'm super excited that I was just approved for an even better CL than the Discover with Chase Freedom.

I am very happy with American Express as a lender. Their website has great tools (like personalizing tags that can be automated and the ability to upload/email receipts directly to an individual transaction) that I enjoy and find useful. However, if I had to pick my favorite card, it would be Discover. I think the rewards are great and very convenient. If you use the card heavily (even if you don't spend a lot) their one-year cashback match can easily beat anyone else's introductory bonus. They could do a better job of letting you track your rewards, but no minimum redemption and a variety of redemption methods make up for that in my book. I've also been most satisfied with their customer service. You can do just about anything in their app that you can on their full website. They were my first prime lender and, anecdotally, they were great with growing my credit limit as my credit improved over time. I've been very happy with them.

I like the Chase Freedom with the 5% rotating categories.

This one is no longer available to new applicants, but I love my no-annual-fee Barclaycard Arrival. 2X dining and travel, and I don't have to strategize for redemptions. I just earn points and redeem them as soon as I have enough. It's the lazy person's "travel" card. I know the redemption minimum is ridiculously high (10k miles) , so, if I ever have to get rid of the card (or they cancel it entirely), I may be left with miles I can't use. At that point, I will probably be angry, but for now, I love the card.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

Overall, pre-nerf Prestige...but Platinum and IHG aren't far behind.

Discover would be a more distant fourth.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

For me it has to be AMEX Platinum. I know it has a steep AF, but has some sweet rewards also, especially if you Travel a lot. I am a Travel Agent, I own a Cruise Planners Franchise, and Cruise Planners is an American Express Travel Representative. I have learned more about some of the Cards neat perks through selling travel. Cruises for example, if you have the Platinum Card you can get up to $300 onboard credits, State room upgrades and much more for using your platinum on most Cruise Lines. we are going to Alaska on Princess Cruise Lines in June for a 5 day, Land tour/7 night Cruise. We are getting a $300 OBC and a free meal at one of the Specialty Restaurants for using Platinum. Love it
Discover it $3.5K
BOA CR Visa Sig. $25K
Chase Freedom Visa $2K
Chase MRP Visa Sig. $5K
Cap 1 Vent Visa Sig. $13K
Citi HH Visa Sig. $10.1K
AMEX Plat NPSL
AMEX BCP $20K
AMEX Gold Delta SM $8K
BC AR + WEMC $3.5K
Cap 1 Spark Cash Bus Visa Sig. $4k
Chase Ink Cash Busin Visa Sig. $5K

I also thought it was a $100 minimum, but the website says it's still $25 for the no-AF one. The $100 minimum is for the AF one...a way they discourage closures.

You're right! I had just assumed that, when they made the switch, it affected the no-AF card too.

But just logged in and confirmed -- it's a min of 2,500 miles for the no-AF Arrival. Also noticed that a meal out I had recently is coding as a "travel" expense, since it was at a hotel restaurant.
