There's good and bad in everything depending on how you look at it. Since I found these forums, I sometimes feel like I'm riding a moped in the fast lane. People worried about churning to get bonus points forget that when you are just starting out or recovering from credit problems, you won't be able to apply for the best cards out there. Cap1 approved me for an unsecured Platinum card with a $300 limit when nobody else would. They gave me a $100 CLI after 3 months. Granted the limit is low and there are no rewards, but it is credit. I've used the card every month, send them a payment and my credit score goes up. Yesterday I was approved for a Menards Big Card with a $2,500 limit.

If you have a 750 credit score, then it would be crazy to waste a credit pull on Cap1 but if you have a 620 credit score and Cap1 gives you an unsecured card, you won't think they suck, then in a couple years when you can get that Chase Freedom, don't forget that someone had to take a chance on you first. I can't say I'm too excited about their top end cards, but something is better than nothing. Someone starting out with a QS1 might want to swap it out for a QS when their credit improves

I have a mixed opinion about Cap 1. I think they are great if you are just starting your credit journey. They issued me my first card many years ago. The problem I have with them is they are the slowest to grow with you as your scores go up. (see in my sig). Even when they were given out 20 k limits like candy they would still deny my cli request.

They are great for starters but once you built up your credit just throw it in drawer because it will probably be your oldest card.

They are also one of the few cards that charges NO foreign transaction fees. It may have even been the first. Have had one for many years and it was my travel card at one point. Currently I use my CSR for all of my travel so it stays sitting in my safe. I refuse to cancel it because of limit and time I have had it. :) I hope at some point they will make it viable again.

Maybe I'm the exception here, but I don't think Cap One cards "suck." The cards aren't particularly "exciting", sure, but I have gotten a lot of value out of my QS, and continue to. And I'm not just talking about the easy earning and redemption options and no FTF.

Capital One has been running promos with Uber since last year. For a while it gave you rather big discounts on rides. Now it gives you a $15 credit for every 9 rides (which, if you use Uber Pool, maybe very close to what you actually spend on 9 rides). I wouldn't say I'm an avid Uber user, but I do use it from time to time.

They have been good with limits to me. I generally use online chat rather than calls, but I can't remember having trouble getting customer service.

And yes, they were the first (along with Citi) to give me a shot when I was rebuilding. They do get brownie points for that.

PRG lost FTFs less than two years ago, and Platinum only a few years before that. I think most no-FTF cards...especially a few years ago...had AFs.

If QS has truly been without FTFs for many years, then it would have been one of the earlier no-AF options.

I got the Venture several years ago when they were running a 100K point promotion. I don't use it that much anymore with CSR.

Completely outdated information. A lot of cards don't charge foreign transaction fees.

The only cards with FTF's in my wallet are my AMEX Blue and debit cards.

Here's just an example of cards that don't charge FTF's: Most AMEX cards, NavyFed credit cards, USAA cards, my local credit union credit cards, pretty much all travel cards, Chase Amazon card, etc.

Cards aside, their CreditWise program always notifies me of inquiries way before Karma, etc.

I've noticed this consistently over the past year or so for card application pulls. And got preapproved for a mortgage yesterday morning and Cap 1 CreditWise popped up an email notification about the credit pull within 5 minutes. Karma just notified me today. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but thought it was an interesting data point.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

It was long before QS that I was using them with no FTF's. For a long time they were the only one. I know there are more now, but I guess its some loyalty? :) perhaps they will put out a new card before to long that I won't be able to resist.

I don't even remember the details, but they tried a bait-and-switch on me many years ago when I was a student. Some offer they wouldn't honor.

While I don't remember the details, I remember I was annoyed. Add to that negative experiences friends have had with them, and I've decided to give them a miss ever since I became more credit card-savvy. There's a reason their nickname is Crapital One.
