Discover 5% January-March '17

Postby mountaindewvoltage » Wed Nov 02, 2016 1:13 pm

Thanks to KDM's post on MyFico which I happened to come across.

I don't feel like posting over there at that middle school, so I'll start a topic here.

5% back in January- March includes: ground transportation, gas, and wholesale clubs. This seems more like a benefit Discover should be providing in the summer months rather than the winter months.

Personally I think they should've did airlines, grocery stores, and gas. Disappointing way to not max out my rewards before my 1 year mark hits in February. :(

Amazon has gotten two quarters in past calendars, maybe we'll see wholesale clubs get that treatment. Interesting that they just did Sam's Club specifically in this quarter, but they're making it more generic next quarter. I just joined Sam's (again) last month, so I'm not complaining.

So that adds Costco.com and BJs.com...not sure what cards BJ's takes in-warehouse, though.

I hope not. Wholesale clubs are worthless to me. If you want nice wholesale club rewards, get a Sam's Club or Costco credit card.

Thanks mountaindewvoltage for starting this post!

While this is news to me, I'm not surprised about gas and ground transportation. 5% in these categories in the 1st Quarter seems to be a trend for Discover. Wholesale clubs (that are not Costco) are new. It appears that Discover is trying to compete with Chase Freedom's 5x URs at wholesale clubs offering.

I am excited about these categories, but if Freedom also has gas as its 1st Quarter category next year, I'm going to use that card instead. Wholesale clubs are worthless for me because I only have Costco in my area. If I get a Costco membership, I would use Freedom provided Chase continues their 5x promotion into next year.

If they're going to double dip I'd prefer they did it with gas or restaurants, but I won't hold my breath on that. Wholesale clubs are worth more to me (at least currently) than Amazon or home improvement.

I do like that Amazon has been a 5% category for the last two quarters since I do quite a bit of shopping there.

I do want them to include dining as a category more often, though. By dining, I mean both fast food and restaurants, not just restaurants. Although if Discover included dining two quarters in a row, my NavyFed GoRewards card would see about a 90% drop in usage during that time period.

I'd rather see dining than wholesale clubs, which just feels very "me too!" on Discover's part. I get that everyone is competing for wholesale club swipes right now but I would have liked to have seen something more original. It's better than last year, though, where IIRC it was literally just gas/ground transport in Q1.

Discover's restaurants category has included fast food, as least going back to their 2014 calendar. Different categories are going to have wildly different appeal to different cardmembers. I liked when they included clothing stores in their "holiday" Q4 category; other's were upset that it meant losing online shopping because they spend a lot more there. It just depends on an individual's spending. I imagine restaurants are a pretty valuable category for a lot of cardmembers, and for that reason I doubt discover will make it a category two quarters in a year. It's too broad, too, and in the past what I've seen them double dip in is a major retailer, like Amazon.

It does feel like they're jumping on the wholesale club rewards bandwagon to me too. It just so happens that will be more useful to me than Amazon so I'm not complaining.

It is a bit predictable, but I'd rather get broad categories where I spend more than see them get too original because that will likely mean more niche categories.

I probably won't be using my Discover card at all. The categories have been very lackluster, and with groceries being my largest spend category, the Chase Freedom wins. Although I have no use for the Chase Freedom other than the rotating categories and it being a VISA, so I have seldom use for it too. I will be using my Amex BCE as my main card unless there are better categories next year on It or Freedom.
