Starwood/Marriott merger now official -- thoughts, concerns?

The Starwood-Marriott merger -- It's happening:

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/marriotts ... 00935.html

Been thinking about getting the Starwood card for a while, but is that pointless now that it's merging with Marriott? What is everyone who has either of those cards thinking?
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

It's not pointless if you can make good use of the bonus before the rewards programs merge. I have enough hotel options for the time being, so I'm not going near either one.

There's still little public information (or even semi-reliable gossip) about how the SPG program will fare. When you compare the cpp and earn rate of the SPG Amex to the Chase Marriott Visa/Ritz cards, I just don't see a way for SPG holders to fare well.

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Status match. SPG Gold (from Amex Platinum) gives Marriott Gold.

Of course, given how easy that was, the actual value of Marriott Gold may have decreased. Having many more people eligible for room upgrades means a decreased chance of success.

*The programs should remain separate for at least the next two years, according to FT quoting a Marriott exec.

I signed up for a Marriott rewards account to merge the 2, and get status matching (Gold through my Amex Platinum). Looking in the Marriott app at my rewards account, it says my points will expire on 5/11/2018. I thought that was interesting, because I don't have any points, so it wouldn't be from the last activity. I wonder if they plan to be done merging the systems by then? Although, it seems really aggressive to have a specific date already laid out.
