Has the US Bank Cash+ become easier to get?

Postby To My Credit » Wed Aug 17, 2016 3:38 am

I haven't been following the changes that have been happening at US Bank and with this card in particular, but I've seen it suggested that it has now become easier to be approved for. Something to do with the default card being discontinued and the minimum limit to be able to get this card being dropped. So I wanted to check with you guys to see if anyone can tell me whether that's the case.

As you can probably see from my signature, this is a card I really want, but I've put it off until next year because I'd heard it was tough to be approved for. If it has become easier, I might give it a shot and apply for it.
Current cards: BankAmericard CR, BankAmericard BBR, Citi Double Cash, Chase Freedom, AmEx BCE, Discover It
Wishlist: US Bank Cash+

The only sense that it's now "easier" is that you don't need a $5k limit to get approved, which you did previously. So if you were borderline before, you'd get a tiny limit Cash Rewards which was just a 1% card. Now, you can potentially get a tiny limit Cash+ instead.

That said, US Bank has never been and never will be known for generous underwriting. They are very conservative especially if you don't have cards/banking relationship with them already. The card has never been easy to get. You couldn't even apply online for a long time. US Bank is a "relationship based" kind of bank who is really mostly interested in customers who bank with them and expanding the relationship. They aren't nearly as welcoming to people just looking for CCs. That's my impression anyway. I have a Cash+, but no further relationship.

I guess I'll just wait then. I have 5 inquiries on all of my credit reports, so I'll maybe let them drop before I apply for it.
