August 2016 Garden Club/Cult

Postby JonE » Mon Aug 01, 2016 8:46 am

Yeesh, is it August already?

Fire away.

I will be joining a credit union sometime in the next few paydays, remains to be seen whether I'll apply for any Credit card they offer (they have a MasterCard with some pretty decent rewards), beyond that I'll just be paying down some more balances and working on CLI for the foreseeable future on what I do have.

The recent frenzy with Discover CLIs has me cautiously optimistic that I can get something done there once my scores are right. And Synchrony likes +700 scores for CLIs on their cards. The toughest nut to crack should be Chase, and might just have to take a HP to get that raised.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

Still in the garden here. Inquiries are aging and AAOA is increasing. Honestly, I'm over spreading my spend across several cards. Using just a few is much easier for budgeting and for concentrating rewards. Some people want to use 20 cards for the best return on every single purchase, but for me, the effort vs gain just isn't worthwhile. Happy gardening all

Letting new-ish accounts cool off and age while I consider whether I want to become 5/24 eligible. Using a bunch of my accumulated points.

My credit is in a good place (decent score, not many inquiries), and I'm still pretty happy with my current cards. No plans on applying for anything in the foreseeable future, but as usual I'm not actively gardening. If I see something I want I'll have no problem going for it.

Now that double cash back is over for Discover, I'll be earning more MR.

Why I'm so reluctant to add another card, keeping it active and occupied just doesn't sound like a good time. Once the rebuild is over, I'll pare down the Synchrony cards, maybe keep one that's useful and add 1-2 more bank cards for a total of 4-5. That sounds about right for me.

I almost feel like saying mission accomplished scores around 800 utilization at 2%. I can't think of anything I would apply for at this point. It's been a long journey to get here.
BoA Cash Rewards $13,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred $14,000
BoA Better Balance $12,000
Amex Every Day $24,000
Discover It $17,000
NFCU Platinum Visa $25,200
Barclay Arrival WMC $10,000
Cap One QuickSilver WMC $6,200
WF Cash back Visa Sig $11,000
Citi Thank You Premier $11,600

I'm at like 8% utilization overall...50% on Freedom, and 25% on Prestige. I'll pay the balances on time to avoid interest, but wouldn't mind an auto CLI on either. I don't think it's worth a likely EX pull, though, and wouldn't trust a Citi CSR who said it was soft. There are stories of banks and CUs "piercing the shield" of an existing customer's frozen CR.

I hopped out of the garden for the Amex Delta for the 60k miles bonus. I don't plan on apping for anything else until next year. All inquiries but this one will drop off in 6 months. At that time I'll see if the "new Chase Sapphire" will be a fit for me. I had thought the Citi Prestige would be a good card for next year but with the nerfing I just don't see it.

Were you mostly interested in the Admirals access? The AA revenue redemptions?

If the first, you can still enjoy it for a year.

Mostly the lounge access, but also the golf. Even with the nerfing it's still a good card but if I apply next year I wouldn't have the lounge access for longer than 4-6 months would I.
