Superficial Thread: Rank cards by appearance

Postby To My Credit » Tue Jun 14, 2016 10:07 pm

There is this thread going on MF about the BoA CR card and its different designs (although, technically, they're different products, I think) and this got me thinking. Which cards look the best? Some of the premium cards look great, with the AmEx Centurion card being perhaps the best, but what about the regular cards?

Rank the cards you have in terms of appearance, from best to worst. And while we're at it, let's also confess if we've ever applied for a card (at least partly) because it looked good :D

Here is how I'd rank my cards in terms of appearance:

1. American Express Blue Cash Everyday (I think a lot of people don't like how it looks, but I do)
2. Bank of America Cash Rewards MasterCard (again, a lot of people think it looks boring, but for me it's how I've always imagined Credit Cards)
3. Chase Freedom Visa (clean and shiny. Could be better, though)
4. Discover It (pretty basic, not embossed, and peels easily. At least we get a lot of options. The New York skyline one looks nice)
5. Bank of America Better Balance Rewards MasterCard (haven't received it yet, but the color is ugly)

I haven't applied for a card based on how it looks yet, but one of the reasons I am averse to getting Blispay is because of how ugly it looks. The Citi Double Cash looks cool, though.
Current cards: BankAmericard CR, BankAmericard BBR, Citi Double Cash, Chase Freedom, AmEx BCE, Discover It
Wishlist: US Bank Cash+

Best-looking card: Discover Open Road with the Space Shuttle theme. I'm a big fan of the space program, and shuttle launches look very impressive.

Best-feeling card: Chase Sapphire Preferred. Metal. Enough said. :D

Most unusual-looking card: AmEx Blue Sky. First time I'd seen a transparent credit card.

Best-looking defunct card: MBNA Star Trek MasterCard. Nice touch: When my credit line went over $5K and they upgraded me to their "premium" product (World Mastercard, I think?) the motif changed from a black card with the original Enterprise to a silver card (reminiscent of the then-in-vogue platinum cards) with the Next Generation Enterprise-D.

Brooks Brothers has blue and black diagonal stripes - pretty nice.

Discover, AA, and Sallie are boring and ugly. I'll get a new Discover design soon.

I don't like the snowy look of ED and BCE.

IHG and Arrival add a bit of color to a mostly blue and grey wallet.

This crops up over at MF occasionally. Interesting read over there.

So, I'll play.

1 - JP Morgan Select. Simple elegance :)

2 - American Express Zync. AMEX, ya shouldn't have let this one die. Shoulda been enhanced, so much potential... :(

3 - Merrill Lynch Merrill +. That silver bull on the front just screams "money" ;)
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

For my cards...

CSP
Prestige
Platinum
DC
BCP
Discover
Freedom
BoA (hideous - I think the hideous grey one before was better looking than the nasty one they made now...)

The first three are difficult for me to rank.

If you take out the metal aspect of the CSP it probably drops to third. Also not positive if I like the Prestige appearance more or Platinum. It probably varies to be honest.

Also I like the Amex gold cards and business charge cards as well. They seem ugly sort of, but they look good in person. Amex has that intense sparkle it manages to put on the cards that make them look good.

Freedom, in my opinion, has potential, especially because of the green rim, but the card is literally too shiny / almost hologram-like. I can't look directly at it even at night.

Discover, I had the original Chrome design which I thought was ok in appearance, but the cards seem extremely cheap. I also had the regular It blue design which I trying is pretty ugly. I recently got that fading rainbow design which I think looks decent.

In my wallet generally is...

CSP Business Gold Platinum on the left
Prestige DC and my license and health insurance on the right.

6 slot wallet, small and tight. One cash compartment. No inside pockets or anything or any kind. Love my wallet.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

If I really had to based off of what I have in my wallet:

1. Chase Marriott (I'm a sucker for sleek, minimalist, and solid black. Just the fact that it's metal makes it the "shield" of the wallet.)
2. Amex Platinum (it would seem kind of plain but nonetheless the silver/platinum color screams if you got it, flaunt it attitude)
3. Barclay Apple (solid white color pure essence even though I hate the fact that it get dirty)
4. Delta Amex Gold (trying to get used the color in general. just doesn't do anything for me)
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

Is there some asset minimum for Merrill+? Or people just think there is? :ppp

Chase Freedom is the best looking card I have. Discover IT, CareCredit and Amazon are hideous.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

I also like the way the BCE looks and would rate it as #1. There's no other clear credit cards that I know of other than the few from Amex. The BCE looks really cool if you have the version with ExpressPay like I do (the NFC/EMV dual chip).
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

I wonder if they've run out of those post-Orlando...

Are there any other Discover designs you do like and are considering? I might try the mixed tape or beach next.
