Where have you been able to/not been able to use EMV?

Postby CreditCardGuru » Mon Jun 06, 2016 11:05 am

Hi everyone,

We're putting together a list for an upcoming blog of all the Top U.S. retailers and their progress towards EMV compliance and are hoping to do a little crowd-sourcing.

We've been able to spot-check most of the places on this list (as well as get official confirmation from some of the retailers), but would like to do another layer of checks (especially because many of these chains are regional and harder for us to check in person).

And that's where we hope you all might come in. If you have had any recent experience (in the past 2 weeks) with any retailers on the following list, we'd love it if you could let us know (by responding to this thread) whether you've either a) Been able to use your EMV chip card or b) Had to swipe your card's magnetic stripe. We're looking for responses either way. So, if you've shopped at any of the below stores, we'd like to hear if you were able to dip your card into the chip reader or had to swipe.

Any info on which metro area you were in would be helpful as well, if you want to provide it.

Thanks so much for any datapoints you can give us!

Wow, it seems I shop at fewer of the major retailers than I imagined. The above 3 are the only ones I ever shop at.

I shop at Kroger weekly, sometimes multiple times a week, and they always do EMV. If I try to swipe an EMV activated card it gives an error message and I have to do EMV.

I shop at CVS about monthly and they too always do EMV and once again I believe if I try to do swipe it gives an error message.

I know I shop at Walgreens occasionally and I think they're accepting EMV too, but I shop there much less often and am not as confident in my answer. Kroger and CVS definitely do EMV though.

I'm in Houston.

Walgreens - 100% by me uses chip (and it's literally lightening fast compared to all other readers I've used)

McDonald's by me - I believe no

TJ Maxx - yes (first time ever on there was last week)

No memorable experience with the rest of the list.

I would say in general, it seems to be hit or miss. Some Walmarts don't use it, most do. Target I think doesn't.

My feeling is the larger retailers don't quite care but the smaller stores run by regular people do because if they had a data breach and were actually held responsible they would go right out of business (and most likely be personally liable through their personal guarantee on the terminal).
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I can't remember off-hand if Stop & Shop or Big Y use it, so I'll have to pay a little more attention next time.

Still magnetic at Costco in CA.

Maybe the membership requirement reduces the risk of clones.

I can confirm the following:

TJ Maxx -- still mag stripe by me (machine had EMV slot, not activated)

HEB -- all mag stripe at the many locations I visit. Machines have slots, not activated.

McDonald's -- mag stripe. Machines didn't even have chip slots at the one I just went to.

-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

Publix: I have been to several stores and they all have been upgraded to chip readers but it is turned off, you must swipe. They also seem to be the only merchant to ask if the card is credit or debit after it is swiped.

Walgreens: They all take chip cards.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

Publix by me (Palm Beach county, Florida) is the same way: Readers upgraded, but they're not using the chip capability yet.

Best Buy was actually able to do chip now.
