Just shaking my head

Postby MemberSince99 » Mon Jun 06, 2016 8:45 am

I was reading on MF and one subject line was I just got approved for amex delta platinum is it worth it?

Dude seriously don't you think you should ask that before you apply?

Do you go buy a car then do research on it?

Besides just because its worth it or not to someone else doesn't mean that applies to.you.

They say there are no stupid questions but I assure you having been on these boards there are stupid questions. That's about as dumb as it gets even more than what are my odds for card xyz.

How can people live life like this.

You should already know that most of them already do that. I don't understand the logic in getting the card now and then consult random people that don't know anything about your life if that was the right card for you. Looks like they are going to learn the hard way especially considering they are getting rid of the whole pro-rated fees for cancelling an AMEX card. They are already scrambling about that.
Wells Fargo Platinum 2.100 (5/2011-cld 7/12/14)
AmEx Platinum (6/12)
Barclays Apple (6/12)
AMEX Gold Delta (5/13)
Marriott Rewards (7/14)

My credit score
EQ: unknown
EX: 762
TU: 752

I replied to that as my first ever post on the forum there. The OP basically threw a fit on me. He / she is a full blown moron. Then the OP tried to somehow pretend they didn't mean what they clearly meant with the question. Then the OP said no one asked you, somehow suggesting that his open ended request was to be answered by anyone but me, presumably because I'm not a moron also who told him good job for applying for a card who's value you have yet to determine. I did acknowledge what I considered to be a nice SL with Amex, but OP ignored that and continued to scold me for informing him of his foolishness (in a mostly nice way initially in my opinion too).

It was pretty agitating but also entertaining.

The sad thing is, a lot of people seemed to agree with what I said but backed right off as soon as someone had a problem with it.

I'm not sure how many ways the post could be interpreted other than the way it was clearly written, but I suppose I'm at fault for gently suggesting to figure it out before you apply AND that no one can answer the question anyway without being the person himself...

Yeah you guys are right. They do that. A lot.

I have applied for a lot of cards, but I can honestly say, before I do, I take my time and consider if I feel I can really make use of it. Does it offer some kind of value to me, that I want it? I mean it's not like collecting postage stamps or something every inquiry and new account drops your score. Some of these have an annual fee (his card had a really high annual fee at least to me). And like was mentioned Amex won't be refunding you if you dump the card or PC it once you pay the fee, that money is gone whether you keep it or not.

It just seems a stupid way to live your life but people have the right to do it. I just can't understand the backwards thinking I mean to me you research it and see how it fits you and your needs, and then you go for it. I still agonize a little bit over every app I make. I may take weeks to think about it and research the card. Not all of them, but most. And I sure wouldn't go onto a board asking if people think the card is worth it. Maybe it's completely worth it to them, but how do they really know if it's worth it to you? YOU know that better than they ever could, or should be able to figure it out. They can't possibly know your situation as well as you do. Well not in any legal way I'm aware of anyway!

It just kind of blew my mind a bit. You have to wonder how they live life.

This is perfectly said. The only thing I would add is simple. Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone acts without thinking. Everyone has something to learn.

I wasn't nasty in my response. I just said that he should have thought about that before he applied. I can completely understand if he didn't. But now that an intelligent point has been made, absorb the information and acknowledge that it makes perfect sense. Don't act like a 4 year old child who is also a moron.

I think your question is valid as well. Exactly how do these people live their lives? He buys dinner without checking if he's allergic to it or not? Buys clothes without seeing if they fit? Gets a tattoo of some image he's never seen before?

The Delta Platinum card isn't permanent, but the HP will last two years and if he closes the card today, that will last 10. God forbid someone let him know he may have made a mistake and he should think before he acts next time.

Also, I plan the shit out of my apps and I haven't apped for anything in almost a year and I had a couple apps very well planned that you're making me (and I'm making myself) second guess now.

I think credit cards, especially travel related ones, are just way too taste specific for anyone to really be able to tell you what will work for your spend and lifestyle. But -- this isn't rocket science. The information is all out there, and there's no need to ask a forum "should I apply?". If you know how to use the Internet, look up the perks of the card, and evaluate it for YOUR spending. That's all you need to do. I don't understand why people on MF want to run endless polls. Who cares if I think you should get a card?

Of course we can make recommendations but at the end of the day I think people rely too much on what they "hear" is a "good card".

I didn't read the post in question and don't know more about it than what was said in the OP in this thread but what likely happened was:

Someone applied for a credit card that they didn't think that they could get. They were happy about it and wanted approval from others. When someone questioned it then that wasn't "approval" and thus they tried to squelch it.

My understanding was that he applied for the card for the bonus it was offering. He was wondering if the annual fee was worth it to keep it for longer than a year. When people suggested that this was a question he should have been asking before he applied for the card, he threw a tantrum.
