To be honest none of NFCU's cards look that wonderful anyway. None of them offer any rewards you can't find elsewhere. Not worth being shady to get in.

Yes, the APRs are nice, but that's about it.

But those people need something to be addicted to so this is just the card of the week.

NFCU has other points of attraction. It isn't just the card but the whole package.

And that's fine. But I still don't think people need to cheat to get in. Regardless of what anyone says, these aren't officially supported methods. CUs are CUs for a reason. If any random person could just join, they wouldn't be able to offer what they do in terms of rates and such.

Military service, really. Doesn't just have to be the Navy (could even be the Coast Guard).
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

Also some DoD contractors, etc.

While a cousin of mine was rebuilding his credit, I tried to join (mostly so I could extend membership to him). Our deceased grandfather had served in the merchant marines in WW2. He was legally classified as a veteran, although I think he had never technically been in the armed services (despite being in battle).

I got a bit of an ambiguous answer from NFCU as to how I should apply, and which records I should provide. My cousin ended up going with a card from a smaller local CU.

I've noticed many credit unions now seem to make it easier to join. I was recently investigation NASA CU (for RV financing, incidentally.) Even though I have never been a NASA employee, right on their membership page, they have this:

Help me open an account another way. A complimentary membership to the National Space Society (NSS) entitles you to join NASA FCU.

They are far from the only credit union to do this.

True. Most CUs are not as inflexible as NFCU is...or, at least, was.

Two months ago, I wasn't sure if I should get a Prestige. It's since become my primary card, even after minimum spend is over.

One thing my wallet is lacking is a good off-category card. A lot of my spending qualifies for some bonus category or perk, though, so it's not a big loss.

There are currently a few factors keeping me in the garden...

1. I'm a little worried about AA. 13 open (and 1 closed) CC accounts is fairly aggressive expansion for someone with less than 3 years of history. I like the cards I have, and I'm in no rush to lose any of them.
2. I have enough hotel and airline points to last me a while, as well as enough programs. The marginal benefit of bonus chasing is pretty low atm.
3. I feel I should save my next app for something other than just more points...whether it be a particular business card some future employer might require I use, a mortgage, or even just a "true PIN" card. If I only knew which of those three I would need next, and when...
4. I have enough accounts/issuers to monitor, so the bar is set pretty high for anything new.

Not to make it any more difficult, but in my opinion based off of the cards you have, the rewards programs you participate in and my understanding of how you value UR points....Freedom Unlimited seems to be your best bet in several arenas for a general spend card. Sorry. It's true. Wait 12 months (from your last new account) or set some other reasonable waiting period for yourself to wait to apply. For that or whatever you decide is your best option.
