Re-organizing cards as spring cleaning

Postby Callmedory » Wed May 11, 2016 11:23 am

We have a CSP and had a United Mileage+ (the AF version). I downgraded the Mileage+ to the non-AF version and got credited back most of the $95 AF. We didn’t need two AF cards and we kept the miles.

We plan to downgrade our Costco membership and use the CSP for purchases there, too.

Another nice thing about CSP? Their price guarantee!

I promised Husband that when our 10yo TV went, he could get what he wanted, within reason. It went, and I wasn’t going to try to fix it (again). He wanted the 65” Sony 3D 4K. Fine, he had been eyeing it for a few years by now. So it was on sale for $2399. Bought it at BestBuy; paid it off (of course). Then the price dropped $200. Took the receipt back, got the $100+tax credited. 2 weeks later, the price dropped another $200. Since by buying it we were “Elite members,” I was able to take back the receipt and get another $200+ tac credited back. Then the price dropped another $200! By this time, the Elite-member window was closed--but CSP goes 45 or 90 days. Called them up, emailed all receipts, the ad, the CSP form, and something else--and within 24 hours, they emailed that I would be credited. Husband said he owes me dinner out at the best place in town for saving $500 on something we were buying anyway.

I went to Costco last week and could not use my CSP bc they only accept AMEX and MC. They told me they're in the process of accepting VISA soon. Who knows when that will be...

June 20.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Congrats on the savvy savings! That's terrific! I really need to look at these features on my cards. It never even occurs to me.

Aww, sorry to hear. I hope they implement that change soon.

Yes, Kevin86475391!

The funny thing is, I’M the one in our family who keeps up with all this, but it was HUSBAND who reminded me to find out about the price guarantee from CSP. BestBuy had NO problem crediting me either time, since I had the receipt, ad, and card--proof of purchase--and mentioned that most people don’t bother. $300 from them? I’d walk the 7 miles for that.

(I have a typo in the initial post--$100 from BestBuy, then $200, then $200 from CSP.)

Costco will accept VISA starting June 20th. They will no longer accept AmEx as of the same date.

Opinons on using CSP instead of Costco VISA?

I know it depends on how much you spend, but our Costco spending has decreased, so we figure we wouldn't recoup the Executive membership dues anymore, we might as well go for CSP points and downgrade that.

That's essentially what I plan to do. I downgraded from executive member to regular membership last year because I shopped so little at Costco (gas purchases don't count towards the executive rewards) that my executive rewards check wouldn't pay the membership fee. Costco was cool about it and credited me the difference, though.

I still figure there's no harm in letting them send me the Citibank Costco credit card, since there's no HP involved. But I suspect it'll wind up being mostly a sock drawer card, as the CSP offers way better rewards. Not to mention, my past experiences with Citi CSRs left something to be desired. I prefer dealing with AmEx or Chase.

The card may act as your membership card. I was told it would, but maybe that was executive only? If it does, you'll need it for gas and to get in and for check out.

If you're 5/24-friendly, maybe go for Freedom Unlimited?
