It depends which lounges you want to use. No card gives access to all of them.

Keep in mind that several $400-ish cards offer credits that can greatly reduce the AF.

I'd avoid the "complimentary" Priority Pass Select membership on Amex HHonors Surpass. For reasons I don't understand, it has extra fees in the fine print. I'd call it deceptive advertising. The AF is only $75, but it's not the same Priority Pass Select that other cards offer. They call it the same thing, but the fees are higher.

I'm not tied to a single airline, or even to a single "home" airport (let alone terminal). For me, it makes more sense to get a card with relatively broad access (like Amex Platinum or Citi Prestige) and just use it when and where I can.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

I was thinking it's getting time to try for another CLI on my Amex. I started a chat to make sure it wouldn't be a hard pull. The guy I got didn't know and gave me a number for their "Credit Bureau Unit" so I could talk to a seasoned specialist. Fair enough - I'd rather him be honest and send me somewhere that could be more helpful.

When I called, I was told any CLI request would automatically be a HP. They didn't do a HP on my first request over a year ago. I didn't directly ask about this, but she also offered that adding an authorized user would be a HP. That didn't ring true to me, but I don't know it to be false. I didn't ask whether this was for the account holder or AU, My wife didn't get a HP when I added her, but I did this when I opened my account. Maybe if I waited until now to add her they really would have pulled my credit for it?

I didn't go through with the request. I don't really need the increase, so there's no point in risking a HP for it. Perhaps I'll try again with another CSR, but I was pretty disappointed with the customer service. I can forgive a front-line CSR for not knowing an answer like that (to a question few people probably ask), but to send me to a specialized department (that I have to go to myself) where I don't even get good information? I may not have a "prestigious" product or be a very important customer, but I'd expect more from any company. Makes me appreciate Discover's CS even more - I've asked multiple times and if the CSR I got didn't know the answer they would try to get someone around or transfer me then & there to someone that did.

Long story short I'm still in the garden.

Makes sense. I've been thinking about asking for a CLI with AmEx myself, but I'm having the same problem getting a straight answer that you are.

Some background: Back when I did my shortsale, AmEx understandably dropped my available credit a lot. I only had the BlueSky back then, and while I don't remember the exact limit, it was over $25K. They dropped it to $8,400 when the Wells Fargo derog hit. No problem, glad they didn't close the account.

I did a CLI about three years ago and got it bumped back to $11,400. That was a SP only at the time, but I don't trust it would be this time. I also asked about transferring over some of the CL from my soon-to-vanish Costco Amex, no can do.

I think I'll wait until the Costco AmEx->Citi transition is complete and until I've gotten my RV done before trying to do anything else with AmEx. I won't consent to a HP even then, but it won't matter as much at that point if I get one "accidentally." It would be nice to pull the CLI up a bit, particularly as it's my last remaining "low" limit -- but, just like you, I don't actually need it.

Apparently, they do it "some" of the time (presumably depending on whether they can grant the requested CLI based on internal records alone), and the CSRs are unable to tell you in advance whether they will do a HP.

At least that's my understanding.

I don't know what the policy is. I just don't believe what I was told, which is they'll do a HP every time.

Freeze reports and find out.

I've never put too much thought into freezing reports, but that's starting to sound like a good idea.
