March 2016 Garden Thread

Postby kdm31091 » Tue Mar 01, 2016 8:28 am

Here we are, March 2016. Spring is in the air!

I'm in the garden for at least several months. Probably longer, as the likelihood of a super enticing cash back card coming out seems low at this point. The new wave seems to be 1.5% cards.

I've been in the garden for about 1.5 months now.

Not sure how much longer I'll be in. I've been flying a lot lately, and mostly on Delta. That said, the flights have been on short notice, and I don't know how much more I'll be flying in the near future. There's no point in getting a card now that (in retrospect) I should have gotten 4 months ago if I won't be using it much for a while.

So no apps planned, but I'm curious to see the Schwab Platinum terms and I'm occasionally checking to see if the Barclaycard Wyndham promo returns. Delta Gold is also possible.

Still planning on being in the garden until December, but this new Chase news has changed things a little. Instead of going for EDP, where I'd need 30 swipes to get to 1.5x MR points, I'll go for the Chase Unlimited where the UR points are automatically 1.5x since it will be a 'cash back' card in the same sense that the current Freedom is a cash back card that transfers to CSP for points purposes. I do wonder if they'll let me get both the CSP and the Unlimited at once.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

A couple of weeks ago I ventured out of the garden for the first time in about 15 months to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred. The signup bonus plus AU bonus was just too enticing to continue ignoring. LOL, I've already made three payments on it and haven't even gotten my first statement yet. Anyway, solidly on track to meet the spend bonus requirements without actually spending anything extra - My Double Cash, Freedom, and It just aren't getting as much love as they usually do.

Anyway, since I just apped, that means I'll probably be in the garden for at least the next year. I guess I could end up applying for something new if a sufficiently enticing cash back card came along, but it doesn't seem all that likely. That said...

What's this now?

I see there's a long thread over at MyFico about a Chase Freedom Unlimited but until now I'd ignored the thread. I guess I have some reading to catch up on. It sounds like this is simply an enhanced version of the Freedom that offers 1.5% instead of 1% on non-category spending, is that correct?

Yes, the new freedom unlimited will be 1.5 percent instead of 1 percent, but you get no rotating categories. Just 1.5 percent period. Supposedly it will be in the form of UR points. Of course, none of the hardcore travelers are eligible for any chase card under 5/24, so not sure why they would be so excited when they won't be able to get the card for over a year or longer.

I for one like the 5x structure. I can see how a 1.5% UR card (assuming it earns URs and not just cash) would be useful for off-category spending, but I'd rather earn 5 URs/$ on a smaller portion of my spending than 1.5 URs/$ on a larger share.

I'm assuming they won't let customers switch easily back and forth between programs, like Discover allows (or once allowed).

Ah, I thought for once it might have just been a card buff instead of a nerf. I was thinking 5% category and 1.5% non-cat instead of just 1%.

LOL, yeah, no reason rush to get excited if you've got to wait a year+ to app :ppp

That's how I feel too. The 5% category on a smaller spend actually makes the card useful. Whereas 1.5% on everything would be useless since I can get 2% on everything with the Citi DC.

Wonder if they'll let me apply for Unlimited and CSP at the same time? Since there's no real sign-up bonus for FU, there'd be no pressure to try to make spend on both cards.

Oh yes there is. 15K UR, plus 2.5K for an AU. I think threshold is $500.

Where is this information coming from?
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It
