Signature or "Check ID"?

Postby ChrisLL » Sat Feb 20, 2016 5:12 pm

Just curious. I know a few people that like to write "Check ID" instead of sign the back of their card. I usually do both. Just wondering what the majority of the people here do. Thanks in advance for the input.

I just sign. I've had very few places that have asked to see the card.

I don't do anything to the back of the card. Mostly the only people that ever ask for anything are at the Post Office believe it or not.

Agree. And when they have, they don't seem to compare the signature to anything (i.e. pin pad), just verifying that it's signed at all. Which seems pointless to me but whatever.

I noticed that too. I rarely get asked to pull out ID, even though I write "Check ID" on the back.

I think not signing is a violation of a card's terms. I sign.

Clerks at my local post office do look very briefly to see there's some sort of signature. Once a clerk there did even compare the signature to my ID.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't say anything when receiving and activating a new card about signing it, but I might be wrong. But I also don't care. Signing the back of that card is easily as stupid as Chip and Signature if not more stupid. It makes no sense. Ignoring the fact that I can't sign my actual signature on the tiny plastic strip on the back of the uneven tiny piece of plastic, it serves no purpose of any kind for deterring any behavior with the credit card. If someone steals my card and a clerk asks to see it the worst thing that happens is they conspicuously leave... Anyway, I think that signature panel is stupid and useless.

On the back of cards:

"Not valid without authorized signature" on AA Platinum and Chase cards.

"Not valid unless signed" on Brooks Brothers.

Other cards just say "Authorized signature" or "Cardmember signature".

I agree it doesn't do much, but it's definitely something CC companies nominally require.
