February 2016 Garden Club

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:28 pm

I'm gardening this month.

I won't apply for anything at least until I finish minimum spend on AA Platinum (which should take 4-6 weeks, depending on how much I use other cards). No particular cards/bonuses are on the horizon.

I had a fraudulent charge on IHG, presumably the result of a large hack at either IHG or Chase. There has been a spike of similar IHG fraud reports on MF, so my case isn't isolated. I'm reminded of the benefit of card-not-present email notifications. Someone wanted to play Minecraft on my dime (presumably to test the card info out) and I called Chase within the hour. Chase's customer service had delays (understandably, staffing must be significantly reduced on Sunday nights) but the reporting mostly went smoothly. They said they'd expedite the replacement. I'm hoping the card number change won't interfere with my participation in Priceless Surprises.

EDP is officially in cooldown mode. I've had a lot of recent spending on it, but once the rewards post with the higher EDP earn rates, I'm downgrading to ED.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

I am sorry to hear about the fraud, but I found the MF hysteria over it a little ridiculous. Conspiracy theories and such. It was all a little over the top. People swearing off Chase and this and that. If you don't want ANY chance of fraud, then I guess you can't use any cards!

Anyway, glad it was resolved for you.

I'm in the garden still. Nothing exciting enough has come along, and I want to let things age since I opened and closed several things in the past couple years. Just letting things heal and sit for awhile.

I expect to stay in the garden this month as well. My last car payment is this month, so I am looking forward to owning my car free and clear. It will be time for some SP CLIs by the end of the month. I'm also taking advantage of the Discover Savings account (new account, transfer $15K, get $100) bonus - no inquiries there since I already have a Discover card and a Discover checking account.

Lol, I pretty much live in the garden. I had originally planned to apply for the Amex BCE in the near future, but now I'm reconsidering it. It would take a very attractive signup bonus to be worth it. The reality is I'm very happy with my current card line up and don't really need or want any other cards, again except perhaps the BCE if the signup bonus is really attractive. Otherwise I guess I'm done with all applications for the foreseeable future. My last inquiry was for the Citi Double Cash about 13 or 14 months ago. I'm really happy with that card and its rewards structure, but unless another very appealing rewards card comes along I guess I'll keep gardening. No desire or intention to buy a car or home in the foreseeable future either.

That's a nifty deal! I have a Discover card, checking, and savings account too. I've had the savings account awhile now and was unaware of that bonus. Congrats!

I used promo code Save4915 for a $100 bonus/$10k deposit Discover savings offer a few months ago. I don't know if it still works, but there might be some other promo.

Mine I know is expired for sure. The deal was that you must open an account by 1/31/16 and transfer at least $15K to it by 2/15/16.

Discover has Q2 restaurants (and movies), and Freedom has Q2 groceries. It will be nice to have two useful non-overlapping categories!

I expect to be in the garden in February and the foreseeable future.

There's still nothing exciting me too much right now. If I could get a Freedom with a $200 bonus I might take it. Even $150 is kind of...meh. Don't know if it's worth it for a new account and a card I'd probably only use for category spending when it didn't overlap with Discover. Still waiting for my targeted 100,000 Platinum offer :ppp

I didn't even know Discover offered promos like that for savings accounts. I'll have to keep an eye out. I've been thinking of opening a separate savings account just for cash back, but a promo like that could change things. I've been accumulating cash back for a while and have a good amount built up. Might as well get it into an insured bank account (plus a little interest wouldn't hurt).

FICO-8:
EX - 827 (4/17) | TU - 812 (4/17)
Primary Cards:
American Express EveryDay - $20,000 (10/14)
Discover it - $23,000 (2/14)
AU on Barclay Sallie Mae - $10,000 (8/15)
plus several store accounts of varying usefulness now

That will be nice! I'm very disappointed this quarter since they're both doing gas....I buy at most $30 worth of gas about every 3 months. So both cards are useless for me right now with category spending. Restaurants and groceries are two of my biggest spend categories though (along with online shopping).

Yeah, I didn't know that either. I've had mine for well over a year though, so I'm sure I'm not entitled to any new account bonus. Their checking account is pretty nice too. You get .10 cash back on every transaction (debit, deposit, or bill pay, up to 300 transactions I think). Not much, but theoretically any time you would be charging something tiny on another card, you're better off rewards-wise using the cashback checking instead. In practice I don't bother with it though since I don't even carry the card.

I'm starting to take advantage of Cashback checking starting this month. Up until last month, my CU was giving 4% interest on up to $20K account balance with certain conditions (like bill pay), so I just paid all my CC bills with them for simplicity's sake. They are reducing that now to 3% on $10K balance so I'll leave one bill with them (I have a CC from them so luckily it'll be just that) and move the rest to be paid (pushed) from my Discover Cashback checking.
