I took a little break from the forum, and it wasn't great. I did enjoy not feeling like I HAD to be on checking all the time, but I also let all the finance fall to the back of my mind. YNAB made some big changes in the process so I totally dropped the ball on budgeting. I was also a day late on my Amex payment because I kept saying I would check it "tomorrow." I got nailed with a $27 fee, but I did not lose my 0% promo period, or have my standard APR jacked up to the penalty rate. That was a gut wrenching reality check that I walked away from unscathed.

I did get a SP cli on my DC to $4.7k. It is to mostly help with util as I pay down other cards. We are still on track to have no CC debt by the end of March. :lift: But 2 sets of tires and some regular maintenance set us back 2 weeks. Here is to tax season!

I did notice that I am still receiving the +10 points and +10% points on my Freedom. I could have sworn they were doing away with this Dec '15. Anyone else notice this? I also noticed that when I had a stolen TV refunded by Amazon, Chase didn't deduct the +10% promo points. So I effectively netted 21% back on the TV. :money:

Call to get the fee refunded.

Welcome back! Been quieter without you on here, though I totally get the need for a break.

How come there are no FOTMs any more? :D

Almost a month in the garden. Even though Nixon made a good point about rewards (redemption), I don't think I will be able to travel that much in the near future to make the best out of the higher AF cards (like the Plat).

But I'm with him on the rewards earning aspect. I won't apply for new cards to get 0.5% extra Cashback on $100 a month but I sure won't pay my $150 T-mobile family plan with anything other than the Cash+. I already have it!
AMEX BCE | PRG || Barclaycard Sallie Mae || Capital One QuickSilver | Venture || Chase Freedom | Sapphire Preferred || Citi Dividend || Discover It || UFCU Great Rate || US Bank Cash+ #1 | Cash+ #2 | Club Carlson Plat | REI || Total CL $144.2k + PRG NPSL, not counting AU

I'm just taking the 'less is more' route and making sure all my spending goes on two cards, save for the stuff I can't put on cards, but is helping my credit anyway. Also wanting to get utilization down, I paid off Walmart from Christmas today, and stuck it in the sock drawer along with the Amazon card which is next to be PIFed, then start working on Care Credit while keeping my spending and utilization down on the Chase and Discover. Then drop the three synchrony cards and work with the two I have left. It's better for me to put spending on two cards, as a way to maximize cash back rewards. Once the CSP and EDP are in my collection, I'll start worrying about cash back vs. points.
Wallet: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Chopping Block: Synchrony
Future: TBD

I have seen that too, a decrease in FOTM cards especially on the other sites. I think the general population on there has simply exhausted what they can get from most lenders.

Anyway, I totally agree with earning maximum rewards with cards you already have. I guess I'm just increasingly realizing that for me and my spend level it's just not worthwhile to apply for a new card for a tiny reward increase. The damage to one's credit file just isn't worth 0.5% more a month on something. I can't imagine that damage amplified in the case of the people who apply for a card practically every 2 weeks, so their AAOA and HPs are always getting worse and worse. I guess I see the over the top crowd and know exactly what not to do at this point. Incessantly studying cash back charts to see the best 12 card combo for everything I may buy each month is just overkill for me. Most would do better trying to find other ways to save money vs worrying about these tiny gains.

Don't get me wrong, I love rewards. I just think the obsession of some (especially the chart studying stuff lol) gets a little over the top sometimes.

I bought a laptop battery directly from Dell with AA Platinum, and it looks like Citi Price Rewind will save me about 75% on it. Some sketchy retailer I'd never buy electronics from popped up in Citi's search that claims to be selling it really cheaply.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

I got the initial 10% bonus on black friday. A week later there was a return, which deducted the points based on price, +10 points, and +10% dividend on points earned. There was no return of the bonus 10% points. Then when I purchased the TV for the 2nd time I got all the points again. I have not seen anywhere that they have deducted the ~5k points, but I have also not done the math to see if they just snagged them. I've had 2 statements close since then.

I know I could. But I also see it as my penance to the credit gods. There is no late on my report, and I still have my 0% until October. Both of those are worth more to me than the $27. I would hate to draw a little too much attention.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Penance? Really? Dude. They will refund it. Call it a one time thing as those fees are outrageous.

I'd take a few minutes to try to get the fee waived.

If you want to punish yourself a little, donate $2 to some cause you hate and keep the other $25 for yourself.

That's how I would probably feel in this situation too. Personally, I'd rather take the small fee and not rock the boat.
