Looking for a new rewards card

Postby sdfd504 » Sun Jan 17, 2016 11:36 am

So I am on the hunt for another rewards card and need some advice. I am 27, engaged and just purchased a new house in October with my fiancé (350k approved together without an issue), currently have a 771 FICO score (799 prior pull but had higher utilization at the most recent pull), 760 EQ and TU score. I PIF every statement. Currently I have the cards below

Amex Platinum Delta (16k CL) Est 2013
Discover IT Student (5500k CL) Est 2013
Citi Forward (first card from college) (3600k CL) Est 2012

I fly five or six times a year with Delta and use the platinum rewards for free companion ticket. I am thinking of either getting a Hilton Honors card for when we stay in a hotel or another cash back card? Any advice in which direction to go?

Are you getting good use out of the Platinum Delta and the miles it earns? Is that what most spending currently goes on? Regardless of what you get, if you get another card it will take spending away from this card. Do you think the Platinum Delta will still provide good value to you after getting another card?

Generally speaking, it might be best to have one main miles/points program that earns rewards on the bulk of your spending, plus whatever cash back cards you want that earn rewards at a rate that is marginally higher than the main miles/points program (say, a quarterly revolver that can get you 5% back in certain categories where 5% cash would be better than whatever miles/points you earn). In other words, having the Platinum Delta and a Hilton HHonors may split your spending so you're not getting much from either program. That may not be the case for you specifically, but this is the nature of having cards in different points systems.

I decided to go ahead and apply for the Amex BCE and the Chase Freedom cards instead of the HH Honors cards for the reasons you mentioned. I plan to use them both in place during the revolving 5% periods and continue to use my Amex Delta card for other purchases. I was approved for both cards with a 15k limit each.

I think those are smart choices. Both are solid cards and both currently have a higher introductory bonus than usual. Congratulations on the approvals and limits!

Since you can use MRs on Delta, I think ED or EDP would have made more sense than BCE.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

Good choice, I am looking at the CF for the revolving rewards to off set my Discover revolving rewards. Did you apply for both cards the same day when you were approved?

Gardening Since: June, 2015

Next Cards:
Personal: Chase Freedom Unlimited
Business: Amex Plum
Store Card: Lowes

Yes within the hour. I had to call chase to verify my information after getting the "we will send you a letter or call you" automatic message after applying. I then went to Amex and applied and was approved within 30 seconds.
