How many cards?

Postby Dsdyer » Thu Jan 07, 2016 8:16 am

How many cards does everyone have? Any from the same company?
I was approved by a company and received a email saying my card is in the mail. Then several days later I got the same email but a different date.
It is possible that I could have accidentally applied twice to the same company.
Would they really open me 2 accounts?

I have 4 from Chase, 3 from Amex, 2 from Barclaycard, 1 from Discover, and 1 from Citi.

It is possible to have multiple cards from the same issuer. Some issuers will even let you have multiple cards of the same type, whereas others won't.

I have 13. Why do you ask?

Dsdyer wrote:Any from the same company?

Yup. Multiples from Chase, AmEx and USAA.

Possible but unlikely. You can always contact your creditor to confirm.

At this point, 3 from Synchrony (that will be reduced to one in the not too distant future), 1 from Chase (2 within a year, possibly), and 1 for Discover. Future: Probably 1 or 2 from AMEX and 1 more Chase. I'd like to keep it to as little cards as possible with those companies.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

AA fears? Or you dislike the reward programs/customer service/something else?

Just keep the cards I have to monitor to a minimum. Once my credit supports it I could add a few more in the coming years (probably with the same companies I'm with now), but nothing like that right away. Once I'm in a house, I could see getting a Lowe's account, but that won't be for a while. Maybe a PRG if my spending/ability to pay supports it. I think what I meant by that statement is to stay with what I have, not get a Citi card or a Capital One card, since neither offers anything (besides maybe Double Cash which would be redundant) that excites me.

Right now I have 2 from Amex (soon to be 1), 2 from Citi (soon to be 3) [Costco +1 Citi, -1 Amex], and 1 each from Discover, Capital One, Comenity (Orbitz), Chase (Amazon), and my CU.

What I currently have:
  • American Express
  • Discover
  • Comenity - 2 store accounts
  • Synchrony - 3 store accounts
  • Citi (really DSNB) - owns 1 store account
  • Capital One - owns 1 store account
That's not including another Synchrony store account and a Kay Jewelers card that were closed for inactivity.

What I actually use: American Express, Discover, and a Barclay's card in my wife's name (plus a couple of the Synchrony accounts infrequently)

To answer your other question it is possible they would grant you two accounts, even of the same product. However, if you didn't submit two separate applications, I think it's more likely that the second email was just an error/glitch on their part. Have you looked to make sure neither email referenced the last four digits of your account? As mentioned, you can certainly contact them to make sure, but I suspect just the one account was actually opened.

Pretty standard roster of ten cards. Nothing noteworthy. :)
