January 2016 Garden Club

Postby kdm31091 » Fri Jan 01, 2016 10:56 am

My turn to start a garden thread! Let's talk about our 2016 goals: gardening, paring down cards, reaching a certain score...whatever! Anything goes.

Unless something earth shattering comes along, I plan on gardening throughout the year. There's nothing really that would add a huge gain for my spend level, besides the fact that I racked up a lot of inquiries in 2014/2015. I am enjoying seeing them age and my AAOA grow.

I may have to apply for an Auto loan soon, so my adding accounts sparingly over the last 6mos will be an aid to that..

There are a couple of cards I want but do not need so I plan on staying in the garden for most of the year. I may consolidate 2 Chase cards and 2 Cap 1 cards.
Main goal is to get all three scores above 720.

1. Learn more about earning points unconventionally. In the last two months, I've taken the steps to earn:
50k Delta miles for free with just a few minutes of work. (Fidelity promo)
At least 87.5k IHG points (and very likely more) for $206 and a few hours or work. (A bonus points rate, Accelerate, and Priceless Surprises)

2. PC EDP to ED. It will be losing my Costco spend, and in light of opportunities to earn points unconventionally, trying to reach 30 transactions would be a nuisance for a comparatively small gain.

3. Redeem points already in hotel and airline loyalty accounts well. Conserve MRs and URs.

4. Add a nice airline card signup bonus or three.

Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Happy New Year everyone!

I think I should let my garden grow the first half of the year, and then by the holiday shopping season I will apply for new cards to receive some great sign-up bonuses.

Hopefully this year we will see some new competitive offers and bonuses added to our existing cards. Maybe we will see more merchants accepting chip cards! And Apple Pay, but don't count on either of them happening anytime soon; for some reason every grocery store I have been to has the upgraded terminals with the chip reader disabled.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

I think it will be quite awhile before everywhere takes Apple Pay, especially considering the relatively slow start it's gotten off too. I have seen very few people in the wild using it.

Apple Pay is largely useless to me except for the vending machine at work which takes it.

Another goal: Redeem my first IHG annual free night for a room that would otherwise cost at least $300...most likely during late spring or early summer in NYC...

Around December this year, I'll apply for EDP and (maybe) CSP. I don't really need a travel card NOW, but I could anticipate using one in the future if my income grows (which it's expected to). Will just pay balances off, and let limits grow in the meantime.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD
