Chase sent me an offer for the freedom card with a fixed %18.99 APR when the %0 promo ends but I would get rejected under the 5/24 rule and really If I did it at all it would be for the bonus only. (Leaving aside the fact I don't want to do business with Chase period.)

I find Citi a bit puzzling in that respect. Citi.com had been saying I was pre-qualified (with specific APRs) for Double Cash and AA Platinum for a while, but most of their mailings during that time were for Simplicity and Diamond Preferred.

Maybe they just figure that anyone who goes to their website is likely a savvy consumer shopping around, while anyone who applies for a lousy card just because an offer arrives in the mail is a sucker they don't need to waste rewards on to win.

*And my AA Platinum had a single EQ pull.

Citi loves hyping up the Diamond card. I dont know why. I get mailers for it all the time. But it offers no benefit except for mysterious "easy deals".

I feel the same why about that card. My wife started getting offers all the time after the last of her baddies finally fell off. I used to get various offers, but after moving a couple of times over the last few years they just never caught up with me. I have a friend that seems to think it's some high end, exclusive card - I guess just because of the name - but it would be pretty useless to me.

I guess it's like carefulbuilder said above - Citi is hoping people don't do research and simply bite on the mailers, therefore obtaining a Simplicity or Diamond Preferred with no reward program. I'm sure there are plenty like your friend who see "Diamond Preferred" and assume it's a really fancy card. I will admit that I have heard it is a great looking card in person, but that would never make me apply unless they suddenly add actual rewards to it.

Cap1 is the same. I checked the Cap1 website about two weeks ago out of curiosity and I was pre-qualified for Venture. It shows nothing now, but that might be due to a frozen EX report.

What did I get in the mail today? A Cap1 Platinum offer.

One thing I think is kind of funny is how much money the Credit card issuers waste on mail offers be it Citi trying to low ball, Chase sending an offer to someone with more than 5 accounts in the last two years, Discover sending mail offers to someone they just told where to go and so on. How much waste is there in marketing I wonder. It would be interesting to know how they develop there mailers and how they code there systems that decide who to send offer XYZ.

I do my part by sending back any junk in their prepaid envelopes.

Just closed out one of my first and oldest cards, Chase Slate. I had no use for it, had a CL of $700 after I moved $1500 of original Cl between two other cards. I am not seeking any new credit or CLI's and I have two other cards that are the same age as the Slate was, so this won't hurt me too much will it? on down the line, after my inquiries drop off I may try for the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Chase has been good to me.
