The $89 AF just posted to my Hawaiian Airlines Bank of Hawaii WEMC so I called to cancel it. I've had this card for several years now, in fact I think it is my second oldest card. For the past three years I have called to cancel it every time the AF posts and they have offered me a sweet deal to keep it open.
Last year they waived the AF and offered me a 5k mile bonus with a $1500 spend in 90 days or something along those lines. In the previous years I have always gotten bonus miles and half or all the AF waived.
I didn't even ask for anything this year, other than to see if I could PC it to a card with no AF. No PC options so I just asked to close it. He agreed to close it without making any attempt to keep my business. At the last second though he said I can waive the AF if you'd like to keep it open. My original goal was to not pay an AF so I agreed.
It's not a great card, certainly hard to justify $89 AF. It only offers 1 free checked bag for the primary cardholder only, 2x miles for direct purchase, and a $100 companion discount. If someone regularly traveled inter-island and checked a bag it could be worth it. One good perk is you only need to spend $10k to get 5k bonus miles.
Those benefits with no AF is pretty much a no-brainer though so I guess I'll have it for another year at least!
