I've had declines from Citi and Discover. The Citi one was for a >$6k charge to a merchant in Toronto. I called and had to clear it up. I don't recall the nature of the the Discover incident.

Never had a problem with Chase or Amex. In fact the times I called they both said something to the effect of "we expect our customers to travel". In fairness I was call about Amex Platinum and CSP. Now that I have a Freedom and PRG I'm not sure if it would be the same.

I've never gotten notifications to my recollection on my CSP. However, my freedom is a different story. In fact, I've had to replace that card twice due to fraud. PRG should be fine. When all I had was a green, I used it in Vegas for a $500 purchase and it went through without a hitch.

The only time I've bothered with travel notifications was when I went to Russia. Like has been previously said, AMEX doesn't do them, and I believe I skipped chase as well, but don't recall. As it turned out, the only cards I used while there were my plat and PRG, and my Aviator red. Never had an issue.

Do you put in a travel notice when you make this trip?

I was just wondering because I don't want any issues when I travel this month.

Sorry to raise this thread from the dead -- first log-in in months.

Anyway, no I didn't put in a travel notice. I travel frequently within the U.S. and outside, which is why it's so weird to me that this card always gets declined when I travel to the midwest. I usually put in travel notices when I leave the country (and run into no problems), but I never think to do so for trips to visit family in a state I visit all the time.

In other news, I was recently back in the Midwest and the dang card got declined again. I used it in two separate airports that day, no problem. But then I go to buy groceries in Nowheresville (where my parents live and I visit several times a year) and boom -- declined.

I also get frequently declined when I purchase plane tickets online. Which is SUPER annoying because you usually don't find out til the next day (when you use third-party sites) and then you have to re-buy the ticket.

-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

When travelling, I usually notify the card issuer. Which one depends on which card I use. Since most of my travel involves driving and pulling a trailer, gas purchases are frequent and in various parts of the country. Although I've not had a problem in the past, it's a practise that I continue, notifying the issuer of the date range and the area of the country I'll be travelling.

I purchased hearing aids fairly recently, charged over $4200 on my Diners Club card -- with no problems at all.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

I do alert my banks before I go abroad or make large purchases online from foreign companies. It takes me 5-15 minutes on the phone; seems much easier than being abroad and dealing with a declined card.

Prior to purchasing $1500 in airfare via Wow Airlines and another $700 in accommodations, I called Barclays. Prior to driving up to Montreal last Summer, I called then too.

In the USA I've never called to alert of travel. Hasn't been an issue for me. The only time I've been the victim of fraud is when someone used my Citi card number to buy $200 in groceries in another state. Citi called me as I'd just bought a computer at Best Buy the day before so the pattern was suspicious to them. Looks like groceries are the trigger ;)
Citi Forward ($10.1K), AmEx Blue Cash Everyday ($30K), Chase Freedom ($12.4K), Discover it ($5.5K), Barclaycard Arrival ($12.5K), L.L. Bean Visa ($5K). FICO 806 (TU), 812 (EQ), 806 (EX).

Oddly enough, the only time I've ever had any issue of any kind with a transaction was at a grocery store not that far away from my home zip code (not that close, but around an hour away). It was my AUs card and I had made several transactions there over the course of several weeks on several different cards without issue. She used one of her other cards at a place nearby and they declined this card. Amex called both of us but we both somehow simultaneously missed the calls. Then her other card was declined. Then I believe I CSPed it and ended the nonsense.

Point is, maybe it is groceries...
