I want a Marriott Rewards Premier Card

Postby gregshelley@scrtc.com » Wed Sep 16, 2015 12:44 pm

I am a new credit card user, I have a Chase Slate-2200 cl, a Chase Freedom 3500 cl, a BOA cash rewards 1500 cl, discover it 500cl, and a Cap one quicksilver mc 500 cl. my accounts are 2-3 months old, paid in full on time, utilization around 7-8 %. My annual income is $80k a year. Wanting to eventually either get a Marriott Rewards Premier card or upgrade or transfer credit from one of my Chase cards to get the MRP card. Any suggestions would be truly appreciated.

I'd get more history before you apply, but when you do...

Apply for it as a new account. The signup bonus is valuable.

Also, if the annual free night is very important to you, make sure that you can use it. Some people, myself included, find that too many properties are excluded.

Maybe try in 5 or 6 months. You have a lot of cards for a short history, and Chase may feel uneasy about giving you new credit with your flurry of recent activity.

Nothing's guaranteed either way, and my advice is just a semi-educated guess.

Looks like a lot of cards in such a short periord. It would be my suggestion to wait 8 to 10 months to gain more history. From my own experience I would just wait for 12 to really build a good solid history unless you really need the card now??

Also consider the Ritz-Carlton card. A $395 annual fee isn't peanuts, but RC comes with some extras that Marriott doesn't.

My advice would also be to wait at least 6-12 months minimum before applying for anymore credit.

By the sound of it you are better off doing a new application to get the signup bonus, but IF you decide to convert one of your other Chase cards instead, I'd definitely recommend the Slate rather than the Freedom - once your balance is paid off of course. Other than being a great balance transfer card, the Slate doesn't have rewards like the Freedom. Likewise, if/when you apply for the new Marriott card, if you get a credit limit less than you'd like, you may want to consider moving some of your credit line from the Slate to the Marriott.

Sounds like you're off to a great start in your credit journey! The most important thing you can do now, IMO, is just keeping making on-time payments, keep utilization low, and above all give your credit time to age.

Thanks Kevin, yeah thank I will wait at least 6 months. Hope maybe to get a cli on Slate card maybe up to 5k limit first, but won't do if hard pull. that way I will have the 5k limit I need for Visa Signature on the MRP card. I also have 2 co-sign with my wife paid off loan accounts with Toyota for a 2006 Toyota Tundra & a 2009 Toyota Sienna van. we paid those off last year after 6 years of on-time payments. I am Jealous of my Wife, she has a Chase freedom visa signature with a 22k credit access, & she just applied for and got a Citi Diamond preferred with 8.8k Cl. Of course she has an avg. of 7yrs-7mths history no missed payments.
Discover it $3k
BOA CR Visa Sig. $18K
Chase Freedom Visa $2K
Chase MRP Visa Sig. $5K
Cap 1 Vent Visa Sig. $13K
Citi HH Visa Sig. $8.5K
AMEX Plat NPSL
AMEX BCP $20K
AMEX Gold Delta SM $8K
BC AR + WEMC $3.5K
Cap 1 Spark Busin Visa $2K
