I bought a small Amazon gift card with SM. I'll SD it for a few months.

I have the card, I'll be keeping another Barclaycard anyway, and there's a chance my Amazon spending will rise a lot.

And unless there's fraud or a promo on it, it will be out of the picture until 2016. :)

It'll be useful for Walmart.com which I go on more than the actual brick and mortar stores. Beyond that just paying down my other cards, and possibly inactivating CareCredit and just using it when needed. No plans to apply for anything before 2016 when TWO baddies will be falling off my credit report and my car loan payments will be reporting. Then I'll shoot for CSP and/or EDP.

I see you also mention PRG in your signature. I do find value in both PRG and EDP, even with normal AAA. I use a lot of offers, though. For most people having both is probably unnecessary.

I have thought about whether the PRG is going to be necessary. I want the EDP for the swipe bonus over 30 per month, that would be my general spending card plus the categories for gas and Groceries (when Freedom isn't in 5% for gas like it is for another month or so). And for what little traveling I do, CSP would probably work as a travel and dining card. And it would be nice having the combo. I wasn't planning on getting more than 5 cards anyway, but running afoul of the 5/24 rule with Chase isn't in the plans.

After 4 months of checking offers more regularly, and using Amex Checkout once, I've gotten $76 of economic value from having PRG. Over the course of the next 8 months, and from the annual airfare credit (and extra airfare MRs), I think I will get my AF's worth. So I think of PRG as a sort of "Platinum on demand" card. That is, I hope to pay a $0 net AF as long as it's a PRG and can convert it to Platinum at any time without having inquiries or a new account.

That said...if I'd never gotten PRG, I don't know if I'd apply for one right now.

My car insurance payment is coming up...about $1500, which is a lot of off-category spending ideal for earning (or working towards) a signup bonus...I feel tempted to apply for something, but not for anything in particular. EDP is the alternative. There's no fee to use a CC if I pay in a lump sum.

I'll have some air travel in Nov/Dec/Jan, but I can probably use URs/MRs for that, along with the PRG extras credit(s). It will probably be Delta, American, or Virgin Atlantic. I do wish I could apply for an Aviator Red for the renewal miles, but that's not an option.

When I'm not staying with friends or relatives, I can find a simple IHG property. That rules out the need for hotel cards.

I have a few more weeks to think about it.

Is that 6 month or 12 month policy?

I have contemplated going to a lump sum payment, but it only costs $24 extra to pay monthly so I figure it is the idiot tax for not planning for a large payment. After I start work again I will probably switch over to a lump sum.

I'm waiting to see if the CSP will count insurance as "travel." I thought I read it did, but couldn't find an answer.

12 months. My 2014 year-end Freedom statement shows last year's payment as insurance, and not travel. I'd be surprised if CSP counted it as travel.

My insurance doesn't offer a monthly payment option. Only 6 month and 12 month lump sums. :(

When it comes to finding simplicity (or comparative simplicity) in a collection of cards, what criteria do others use?

I try to:
1. Put most of my everyday spending on three cards.
2. Limit the total number of issuers/websites/apps I have to log into.
3. Limit the number of complicated rewards programs.

And who couldn't care less about card/reward simplicity? :ppp

I'm sure yall already know how I roll with my cards. But I'll go ahead and say it again for the hell of it. I like to use the card that covers all my spending categories (currently the AMEX Hilton). If the card is not accepted then I fall back to a card that will get me the most bang for my point (currently the Chase Freedom card). Only exception to this philosophy is when I go out of country which in that case I use a card that has no FTF obviously (currently Cap One Quicksilver). I somewhat prefer points over cash back simply because I have the tendency to use the cash back I earn for statement credit rather than saving it up like I do with points. However cash back as a statement credit has saved my bacon a couple of times so I can't hate on it entirely.

Well for me it is CSP/Freedom for most spending.

BCP gets Groceries, and will start getting gas next month.

DC pays the school bills. Though I am considering a permanent SD for it. I have such little off category spending that the DC would ever take from a UR portal. Plus it's one more place to login every month. Although with my luck I'll have a major car repair around the corner.
