So what other AF travel cards do you have open right now? Have you closed any recently?

I guess technically I'm in the garden. I usually am though, lol. I only apply for a new card maybe once every 12-24 months. The only card I'm remotely considering right now is the Blue Cash Everyday from Amex because I like cash back cards and don't do AF cards. I'm only really considering it though because I don't have an Amex but have Discover, Visa, and Mastercard rewards cards, so I sort of just want to 'complete the set'

I don't think I have too much of a need for it though, so I may not bother. If I do it at all it'll be in about 9 months when my 0% intro APR on my Citi Double Cash expires. I PIF, but I do like the security of always having a 0% APR option just in case. If I do get the BCE I may close an older US Bank card with poor rewards compared to my other cards. It's already sock drawered but I use it once every couple months for small online purchases to keep it active.

Other than that I feel like I'm done actively playing the 'credit game,' which is a shame because it's kinda fun ;) But I don't plan to buy a house or car in the foreseeable future...maybe never, have all the cards I'm interested in, and am satisfied with my credit score. So I guess I'll be permanently gardening, just keeping an eye out for really good new cash back cards or a nerfing of my current batch.

Although I just use mine for offers, it sounds like BCE would meet your needs in an Amex.

There are MF anecdotes that Amex is okay with a person carrying a modest balance, but gets uneasy and gives a CLD and "balance chases" if a person just pays the minimum (or slightly more). That may just be apply to people who have other big risk factors, but I wouldn't go so far as to have utilization over 50% while just paying the minimum.

If the US Bank card will (under current reward structures) absolutely never be your best card for a transaction, then closing it may make sense. I haven't closed any of my cards, because they all have their little moments to shine.

RC, Wife's & My AU Citi Prestige, Aviator with 10K annual AA mile bonus, good god there are so many. I downgraded my CSP earlier this year and CLD my RC earlier this year to get AF refund. Keeping Marriott for sure.

I wasn't sure if Aviator kept that 10k annual bonus. Nice. With a minibonus or two, I can see how its easy to earn flights without spending much. I'm still clueless about Barclaycard's promo criteria.

I'm surprised that the RC AF/CL quirk still works.

I'm thinking of going for Spire on IHG. I'll have hotel stays scattered throughout the fall, and at 5x points plus promos, it's feasible. It would basically be a $400 minibonus between the two program years.

Decided to keep the Walmart card around a while longer, albeit in inactive mode with only a few transactions every few months. It'll be useful for Walmart.com which I go on more than the actual brick and mortar stores. Beyond that just paying down my other cards, and possibly inactivating CareCredit and just using it when needed. No plans to apply for anything before 2016 when TWO baddies will be falling off my credit report and my car loan payments will be reporting. Then I'll shoot for CSP and/or EDP.
Current Cards: Chase Freedom, Discover IT
Future: TBD

I see you also mention PRG in your signature. I do find value in both PRG and EDP, even with normal AAA. I use a lot of offers, though. For most people having both is probably unnecessary.

I changed my mind about Sallie Mae again. It's going into disuse until Barclaycard either gives me a minibonus challenge or closes it for inactivity.

There are too many options to earn significant rewards to bother with picking up a few dollars here and there on the rare occasions Sallie Mae would be my best card. My AAoA won't change significantly if one account stops getting older.

It is honestly an overrated card. On the other hand, I have their Upromise card which is much less discussed and I do actually like it. It's mostly useful for online shopping. Most merchants are 5%, plus 5% for using the card. 10% back on online purchases is pretty great and it's cold hard cash with no BS (other than taking awhile to post, but that's the same with any portal).

The Upromise card also offers 10% on most travel booking sites (Orbitz, Travelocity etc) meaning to me, it's a better "travel" card than some alternatives.

The online shopping portal looks interesting, though with the Chase portal + CSP and a double-rewards Discover I don't think I'd see much additional value.

I'm moving away from Orbitz and Travelocity, and leaning more towards booking directly with hotels and airlines.
