I'm forced to write a check each month to pay my medical premium. I make a COBRA payment to a company that only accepts checks as payment, so I have to mail it to them by the 20th of each month to make sure they receive it to post on the 1st of the following month. They do not have any other means of doing so, there's no on-line option, can't even push a payment from my account for payment.

I use cash once a week for my barber because he doesn't take credit cards. I am forced to write a check once a month for my garbage pick up. For some reason I hate carrying cash on me so I carry the least amount as possible $5-15 dollars.

Actually for me I find cash an inconvenience. Wish every business accept credit or debit cards. However to answer your question, I may only need about $20 a month in cash for misc items, pay rent by check.

WOW, I am amazed by the amount of people in this thread who use cash at the barber's/hair cutting place. I didn't realize this was such a big thing or that apparently barbers as a profession frequently opt not to take credit cards. Honestly I'm not sure I've ever paid cash for a haircut. If I did it would have been when I was in my teens (and didn't have credit cards), definitely not recently.

Honestly the main thing that pops into my head is gambling. I use cash at casinos or for other gambling purposes, but not really anything routinely.

Um, I think several months ago I ACCIDENTALLY got on a toll road and had to pay a toll with cash. Personally, I can't stand the whole concept of toll roads. That's what I pay taxes for! I don't believe in paying separate tolls for the 'privilege' of driving on a road even if it is faster or has less traffic. So other than occasionally by mistake (a lot of freeways and highways in my city exit onto toll roads, so it can happen if you're not careful) I never intentionally get on a toll road. If I did and were willing to make it a part of my lifestyle I definitely would use an EZ Pass.

Normally I agree, but you have a lot of things like bridges where the number of cars traveling across the bridge is directly related to the cost of repairs. Personally I'd rather pay a toll for using it than pay taxes to upkeep something I don't use. I also find the toll roads that decrease your driving time very worth it. One trip I make quite often is about 5 hour without tolls or 3 hours with. Tolls come to about $8, a fair compensation IMHO.

A lot of the damage to roads comes from trucks that aren't local, but are just traveling through. Those trucks' owners won't be paying much in local property/income/sales taxes. A toll prevents local residents from being unfairly burdened.

Kevin you should at least consider getting TX TAG. It's good for all Texas toll roads and it doesn't cost you anything just to have the account open. I've got one on my car and I never need to use it. But it's there if I do, Another bit of information I just learned about which might be interesting to those people who don't live in a area where there is Toll interoperability. You can now use an app called Ptoll to use the toll roads in any state from your smartphone. www.ptoll.com for more information. Looks promising to me.

Before I moved, I had to pay rent with a check and the lawn mower with cash. Now, there is nothing where I regularly use cash or check. I'll irregularly use cash for a tip when eating out, but I often just add the tip to the credit card charge - it just depends on my mood and what cash I'm carrying at the time. I don't like carrying a ton of cash, either, but I'd prefer to carry a $100 bill than ten $1s, so if I happen to have a lot of small bills in my wallet I'll use that to tip. Occasionally I'll get cash as a gift and end up carrying it around for months before it has been spent.

Even before I started using credit cards for rewards, I used a debit card for everything possible over cash for the convenience.

Couldn't your bank mail them a check on your behalf? If you pay bill pay you can set it so it automatically deducts from your account every month on the 20th and Mail there before 1st for sure.

I would do this if I didn't pay cash for my rent (electric transfer to be more accurate)

I have tucked somewhere at home a few hundred in hk, about a hundred in euro, Swiss and American..it's funny the amount of cash I find when I go through clothes/bags I have worn in months.

I keep bags of change from tons of countries in a desk drawer. Love collecting the stuff.
