Final card lineup

Postby MemberSince99 » Fri Jun 05, 2015 2:56 pm

My final core lineup will be as follows:

Amex PRG (NPSL)
Citi Doublce Cash World MC 15k
Discover IT 8.5k
Cap One Buypower WEMC 10k
Home Depot 10.1k
Chase Amazon Visa Signature 23.5k

That is a lineup I'm quite satisfied with. Even 6 cards is a lot, but manageable.
To it, I added the Citi Thankyou Premier 7.5k. I figured I will try that one for a year at no cost.

The ones on the chopping block now:
BofA Travel Rewards Visa Signature 10k
Barclay's Arrival + WEMC 7.5k
Amex EDP 18k
Amex Hilton 9.5k

I may not close the Amex cards, but they will be in the "sock drawer" and it's possibly I'll use the EDP someday it does have a nice limit and good rewards. Hilton I don't use - work told me I'd be travelling but I haven't been so I just haven't used it. I have over 700 in rewards on it though so I hate to close it due to that and no more backdating.

The BofA card I just never use. It's a good card, but I never use it (once in the last 6 months to keep it open). Barclay's I WOULD have used but it is Barclay's and despite it being a really good card, I don't see a future in my wallet because I just haven't become a Barclays fan. I can't close it now because I have 46,000 points on it I don't want to throw away, but its day will come once I use them.

Almost forgot, still have Sync's Amazon card open at 2.9k. That one is getting dumped too. Sync was fine when I was just starting out, but now they are just a PITA. Even for the 5%, to me it's not worth dealing with them.

Sounds like a solid lineup. Honestly, the fact Discover is offering such a sweetheart deal w cashback over the next year is gonna make my pruning of cards a lot easier.

I know you like the Double Cash CL and are using it for a BT. If you're going to seriously pursue the GM Buypower rewards, though, I'd say Double Cash is a bit superfluous in the long run (purely from a rewards standpoint).
Wallet: Prestige CSP SchwabPlat Freedom It Hyatt SallieMae AAPlat
SD: Arrival BrooksBros BCE ED IHG
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

Sounds like a good lineup and glad you pared down to a more realistic level. I like to see people doing that.

To the above -- I think long term, the Double Cash is more worthwhile to keep than the Buy Power. While the Buy Power is useful until the point when you buy the car, then what? The rewards are 100% useless otherwise. Double Cash is a longer term solution.

I'd say keep the Amex cards at least just for the Amex Offers they offer. That alone is gonna make me keep the Wells Fargo Propel World Amex card (I will downgrade it to the lower annual fee version after 1st year.) Those offers alone have already gotten me over 1.5k statement credits this year.

The Buypower might seem useless after you buy a car, but actually, it just depends on how often you buy a vehicle. If it's every 10 years, then yeah maybe after a time it becomes pointless. I do it more often though so it makes sense to at least put 5k a year on it to get the 5% covered.

$250

I'd be more apt to get one if I could use the rewards for service trips.

I thought you could? I swear I read in the literature on it that you could also use it for that. Might have been some wishful thinking on my part then if not.

Anyway at the 5% rate, I'm happy with that.

I have decided to keep the Amex cards. They might be "sock-drawered" but I'm just not going to close them. 3 might be more than I want at the moment but if I were to close them I'd regret it. At least I downgraded the Hilton card to the no annual fee version and if worse comes to worse I can take a vacation someday and use the points hopefully. Or maybe work will actually have me travel like they said. Who knows.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but you started this thread with intentions of paring down. Now you're kind of talking yourself into keeping more and more of the cards.

Obviously, you have to do what you are comfortable with but if you have to say "well maybe someday I'll use the points" you probably don't need to keep the card.
