I guess this is a "Garden Club" topic. :ppp

I used the MasterCard "Priceless Cities" feature to save a few bucks at the NY Botanical Garden.

Lovely roses, and my Arrival was actually my best card for once!

I need to figure out how much longer I should garden before going for IHG. I've already got 9 cards, and this would be the 10th. I've opened up 6 cards in the last 10 months, and there are reports on MF that Chase would really frown upon that.

I'd only use it for IHG stays (and small stuff to keep it active between trips), so I don't need a great CL or APR - just an approval.

PRG will make sense for at least one more year, but may not be worth it beyond that.

I don't have an 80k point offer, though, and could get a great offer for something else. So I'll garden...for now.

I'm not really familiar with IHG, since i'm a Marriott guy but what would say 20K or 10K points get you? An additional night or two? I only ask because I went looking for an 80K offer for you only to find 60K offers...I was just curious what the extra points would do. I assume a free night or two, depending on the property just wanted to ask.

Side bar - Chase may not like the recently open accounts, however i'd guess it's almost a guaranteed approval even if its for only $500. I've had five thousand HPs and I got approved for the Slate for $500. Didn't plan to do much on it, which it doesn't seem you plan to do much with it either, so $500 may or may not work...of course I am not wanting you to wander out of the garden lol, just something to consider. I could be wrong, but that's my experience.

IHG points aren't as good as Hyatt or Starwood, but they are better than Marriott or Hilton. 20K or 10K points would be worth an additional night in a low-cost hotel. IHG points, in my research, are worth around 0.7 to 0.9 cents per point.

The card's value for me is in the free night in a basic room in a high-cost area. At $49, it's hard to go wrong. It's true that it would not make much sense to wait years and years for the 80k offer. 20k points may be worth $150, but so is another year of getting a $200 room for $49.

I could take the route of trying to request the 80k point offer from Chase, too.

I'm mostly concerned with the possibility of being declined for too many new accounts. $500 would be too little, but I could get by with $2.5k on it. I'll give it some more thought. As the credit/travel geek, I sometimes book travel (an extra room or ticket) for relatives on trips and get reimbursed by check.

The value in IHG points is that they can also be bought for nearly 1:1 parity as to what they are actually worth.

Good to know. Hyatt points are valuable, but not cheap to buy.

Browsing the IHG website, I just got a targeted offer for 60k points and a $50 statement credit. $1k spend in 3 months, AF waived for the first year.

It's not the best, but it's better than the publicly-available offer, and I don't have anything else that requires minimum spending right now.

I'll think about it a bit more.

I've looked around there now and then. It's where I realized that the free night options were pretty good.

From what I can tell, though, the best semi-public offer is 60k/$50/waived first-year fee (what IHG just showed me). 70k and 80k look like they are highly targeted for now. Requesting a secure message "bonus match" might be my best bet.

60K + $50 isn't far from 70K.

80K is best. They all have waived AF.

Thinking about this card. Will Chase kick me out the gate straight if I don't let them see their favourite CR?
