Just downgraded my Amex Hilton card to the no annual fee version. Gave a shot for the Chase Amazon, but frankly I'm totally cool if they decline that. (Got the under review message, if I cared I'd call them but I really don't - may the chips fall where they fall). And if you say well then if you don't care why did you app for it, ok maybe I care a bit, it's just not a real big deal to me might be more accurate. If I get the Chase card I'll kick Sync to the curb permanently despite them offering 2% more in rewards. If not, well I'll probably kick Sync to the curb anyway at some point.....

The "gift card" method can work well to ensure that a transaction gets 5% on Sallie Mae, but it does involve an extra step. I can see the appeal of a card that gives 5% on everything at Amazon (which is what I believe most other cards give).

Of course, unless you'd exceed the bonus cap, Discover will soon be the best Amazon card (for Q3).

No. The monthly limit was kinda low on 5% for my needs so I just never applied for that one.

We shall see how my app for Langley CC turns out..that was a mess. That outfit clearly wasn't ready for the fico crowd, LOL!! Saw a post in that thread from CA, that his partner got declined for a CC, requested $40k to be up there with all his others, and the denial letter was crazy stating something like, that was beyond their approval for a limit that high or something like that. Im in the garden though as always, promise this time LOL ;)

Some months, yes. Not every month, but some. But the 250 grocery limit would be kinda limiting.

Not for someone who also has an EDP, though?

True, the EDP would cover my yearly spend with no issue and give a comparable rate of return.

Truth be told though I actually don't use the cards based on rewards - I give the swipes to the lenders who show they want the business, in deed rather than in word. Barclays keeps sending me checks saying they want my business but when I requested a CLI they turned me down flat. Sorry boys but that isn't going to get you any business. Same with Sync - the Amazon Prime card offers 5% on Amazon which I do a lot of spend on, but I'd honestly rather give the swipes to someone who has shown me they want the busineess, thus i'm shifting my swipes to cards that give a lower return rate because I'd rather do business with those who want that business and are willing to prove it.

I know most folks don't do it that way. I do plan to use a LOT of my Citi Double Cash once I pay off the balance on it, as a reward for the nice limit they gave me as well as the great general spend rewards (2%). That worked out nicely.

Or perhaps Discover, with their doubled rewards and constant CLIs?

It's true your approach is unusual. You do (or rather, did) have some unusual cards for a light traveler that doesn't care primarily about rewards.
