Downgraded Amex Platinum

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed May 13, 2015 8:19 pm

I downgraded it before the annual fee hit. I have not travelled since last summer. I have no idea if or when I will be so for now I just can't get the benefits of Platinum so I downgraded to Gold.

I really need to trim a few cards, but I just can't find any I want to get rid of. The only thing that's on the fence is Barclay's, but the card is so damn good that I just can't find it in me to close it despite not exactly feeling the luv for them. I keep telling myself I really need to close a few of them, but I can't bring myself to. Here is what I have:

Amazon Prime 2.9k
Amex Gold (just downgraded from Plat) NPSL
Amex EDP 18k
Amex Hilton Surpass 9.5k
Bank of America Travel Rewards Visa Signature 10k
Barclay's Arrival + WEMC 7.5k
Capital One Buypower WEMC 10k
Chase CSP 12k
Chase Freedom Visa Signature 11.5k
Citi Double Cash 15k
Discover IT 7.5k
FNBO Dodge MasterCard 12.8k
Home Depot 10.1k
Lowes 10k

I just don't want to close any of them. I do plan to downgrade the Surpass to the non annual fee card before the annual fee is due though.

I guess I'll just leave them alone for now and wait for the annual fee on the Hilton card to come close and downgrade that. I really do not use the BofA card, the Chase cards or the Barclays, but I can't bring myself to close them either as they are all good cards. The BofA has some good deals on it I keep thinking I really ought to take advantage of but then I think oh give Discover some swipes and hopefully in a little over two weeks when I hit the luv button it will work.....you guys know how it is.

Do you really need the Buypower and the Dodge? They seem like they cover the same market, plus the Dodge has pretty shitty rewards. You could get away without it.

Will you ever use the BoA if you have an Arrival+ and CSP? You could pc to the BBR and let it earn you some money.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

No reason to close the Dodge - it has a nice limit, no annual fee, and gives you a Free EX FICO. Good point, but the plusses are causing me not to want to close that, plus who knows - it's nice to have the option for rewards for two manufacturers. One thing I never figured out is how to redeem the rewards on the Dodge card at the dealership - if any of them do that, they seem to keep it a secret.

On the other hand, the Amazon card might have a short life - I noticed the last 3 purchases just hung "pending" forever. Now they hit the statement so I assume they won't stay pending any longer. I'm the sort of guy who goes on right away to pay this stuff, so it's been hanging in "pending" state for days with no movement. I hate it when lenders do that so that they can hit you with a balance on your statement. I don't know exactly what the game there gains them, but I don't personally like it. So if that continues, 5% or no, it's gone. Or I just don't use it within 10 days of the statement date. Guess we'll see.

Good point. These had been shipped already, but that's a good point. They hung out there for about a week not sure why. I'll just have to be careful near the cut off date if I don't want a balance showing.

Hahaha! Don't want to let loose that $450 huh! I've been contemplating getting the Amex platinum for my business. My opinion is that you shouldn't have to pay any annual fee. It is what it is. But what makes me lean towards the plum card over the platinum is the 60 day balance carry over. I have net 30 credit accounts set up with material and tool suppliers. And when it's time to pay those accounts at the end of the month I could pay them with the plum card and buy myself another 60 days and build twice the business credit killing two birds with one stone. But I digress.
