Anyway, I have dared to open new accounts after opening their card I'm sure they would not be happy with my credit behavior. Frankly, that's their issue not mine - I really don't care and have plenty of other lenders who would like the business if they wouldn't.

So it's all good. And I'm fine with them declining it I just can't say I'm a fan of enabling that thing if they can't even process it, but they can do a hard pull. Doesn't seem like a good way to treat your customers to me. But again, they have other options and so do I.

Not sure where you stand with them payment wise (PIF or otherwise)

But I went from having to talk my way into a $1,500 CL on a Sallie Mae to being handed $5,000 on a Ring (also recently moved some CL around and when talking with Credit Analyst they commented on my excellent payment history with them, and that they like to see PIF.)

I've always PIF with them. The only exceptions to that are with Lowes with their 6 month promotions, and to get flooring done, which I just shifted to my Citi card which has 0% for 15 months. I broke my own rules iwth that to get stuff I wanted/needed for my house, but the plan is to pay that off before any interest is owed, and otherwise I PIF on all cards. (I want to get back to 0 balances even if it's on 0%).

So I've always done that too. I guess I could call but I really don't want another hard pull. Their analysts seem sharper than some of the CSRs I've talked with so maybe I'll do that.

I wouldn't worry about the HP if you bypass their CSR's and talk directly to credit analyst. Do you have their number?

Got a letter in the mail from them today. The only reason listed for the decline was:

High amount of credit available from other accounts

That is literally word for word.

In other words, I have too much credit in their eyes already. And that may well be, as I have well over 100k in total limits.

Ok, not much I can really say to that. They have the right to feel that way and decline it. Of course, the fact they did will not encourage me to put spend on this card either so I'll take care of those who take care of me. No hard feelings, but I won't spend on it as I'd planned either. Why should I? I owe them that no more than they owe me a CLI. It's business. Citi will see some more action as will Amex and even Discover. Despite the decline on Miles they did give me a CLI on IT, but I'm not going to be afraid to give some spend to others. Like I said, I'll look after those who look after me. That's just how this game works.

They sent me a letter with the exact same reason on it when I tried to get a higher SL on my Ring.

It it's important to you then why didn't you call to see what the deal was?

If it's not important (and a single HP isn't a big deal IMO) then why rant over it?

They're not looking after you. It's all business and all about risk assessment. Different creditors are willing to extend different amounts for a given credit profile. You can give a company that's willing to extend more credit to you more swipes but that doesn't necessarily mean that your credit will improve enough for them to extend you more in future as the two are entirely different matters.

If you expect loyalty from a corporation you're setting yourself up for disappointment (yet again in your case) IMO.

I'm not saying don't vote with your dollars or business. Just be careful with your expectations.

To some extent, I think most of us card geeks expect too much loyalty from issuers.

If only a tiny percentage of someone's spending goes through a particular issuer, and we call to ask for CLIs/extra rewards/special favors, how much should we really expect?

I called Barclaycard to try to get a SP CLI on Sallie Mae, and the CSR simply said I didn't have any such offers available. I think that the CSR (or, more likely, the algorithms that assign auto-CLIs) really wanted to say something like:

"You only use our card when you can earn 5% cash back, and you only spend a few hundred dollars on it a month! Pay us some interest on a small balance or use our card to buy other stuff! Why should we extend you more than $4.5k when $2k would be more than enough? If you want a higher CL, stop being so unprofitable!"

Member, I'm confused about your story. Did you make one CLI request or two? If two, were they both online, or was one over the phone?

Well, with my Sallie Mae, I make similar purchases; but I managed to get a $2.5k increase on my $6k line (not big lines but good enough) using the SP APR then CLI trick on MF. I figured it's best to get to an analyst as soon as possible and since asking for APR reduction gets you to an analyst, that's the first thing to ask for when you call Barclays. I'll try again in 5 months and report.
AMEX BCE | PRG || Barclaycard Sallie Mae || Capital One QuickSilver | Venture || Chase Freedom | Sapphire Preferred || Citi Dividend || Discover It || UFCU Great Rate || US Bank Cash+ #1 | Cash+ #2 | Club Carlson Plat | REI || Total CL $144.2k + PRG NPSL, not counting AU

I'm still in the promotional 0% period, so I can't do that. Plus, I got EDP so SM is now just for bookstores/Amazon.

Barclay is one of those issuers which is hard to figure out. Until recently, I had never been declined for a new card or CLI from them even though the word on the street is that they don't like too many inquries/new accounts and I've always had both whenever I apply for one of their cards. My most recent inquiry was a decline for the Ring, but there was no HP which I found interesting. Apparently, I have reached my internal limit with them so they didn't even bother to pull (plus it seems they soft pull the hell out of me not including the ones they do for my fico score).
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450
