My current goal is mostly to just grow what I have. As a secondary objective I'm looking at the value of the fees I'm paying. I'm not sure right now that expensive travel cards are my best move. I'm giving through to downgrading my Amex Platinum to PRG or even just Gold. (Saves me AAA membership with Gold vs Green and for the extra 30 bucks it costs it pays for itself that way).

With that in mind I requested and got a CLI on my Double Cash, requested and apparently was denied a CLI on my Arrival + (though I haven't heard from them but that was last Wednesday and no increase and no word so I htink it's a no go), applied for and was denied the new Discover Miles card (for exposure limit is what I gathered - the top reason was "Too little time with current account with us" or something to that effect), and requested and was granted a CLI on my Home Deport card - it had been sitting at 1701 dollars and was raised to 10.1k.

So it looks like 2 out of 4.

I'm really thinking of going back to Gold on my Amex charge, as I'm just not sure I'll be travelling enough to justify Platinum. I know that's subject to change at any time, but that's kind of where it's at right now. If my travel needs change in the future I'm sure I can upgrade at a later point.

I have AAA also and it is good for hotel discounts too.
I just trust AAA more if i have a roadside emergency since that is their specialty instead of calling a credit card company although they cover it...

Roadside assistance on Gold got nerfed in late 2014. The top-tier Amex roadside assistance now requires PRG, Platinum, or one of a few other high-AF cards like Delta Reserve.

I may switch to AAA myself.

I was considering getting a PRG for the roadside assistance until I read they only cover the first $50. Here in NJ it is almost guaranteed to be a $100 "hook-up charge" plus between $2.50 and $3.50 per mile. I've had two tows this year that cost me a total of $400 out of pocket because I was too stupid not to upgrade to AAA+ after the first. That covers a membership for a few years.

Maybe when you call to downgrade to PRG mention that your travel is too sporadic to make use of the Platinum. Maybe they will drop the AF for you. I think it is crazy but people on MF talk about it all the time. Worth a shot if you are ok with the idea of a PRG to begin with.

I just did a search and found a few articles that mentioned the $50 figure. They are all kind of old, though, and could easily be outdated. Do you know of anywhere that the $50 figure appears on recent, official Amex publications?

I spent a lot of time a few months ago trying to figure out what the best option was, and everything I was looking at was recent (at the time) and on the card issuers' (or Visa/MC) websites. That $50 limit with Amex is something I did not seen, so I suspect it may be pretty old.

you're right. I wasn't even looking at dates. I did find the new agreement here http://www.americanexpress.com/us/conte ... terms.html

it looks like you get benefits similar to AAA basic except for a few minor details like "emergency towing only." And looking at it more it looks like the green and gold have the exact same benefits. PRG is the "lowest" card to have free anything.

Neither AAA nor AMEX nor anyone else offering road service coverage actually owns trucks. They have a contractor that does the work, and they pay a contracted rate for service (My experience with AAA rates were they were too low to be worth bothering with. Somewhere where AAA could keep a truck or trucks busy all day, you could make enough to cover the costs of those trucks and some fixed costs. I used to run a garage that AAA was trying to recruit as their service provider.). That's less than they'll charge someone who calls up and is paying retail, so two guesses about who gets serviced first, contracts to the contrary notwithstanding.

My last AAA experience: My wife called for a truck at 7:30. Got there at 10:30. (I went to let my wife have my car) Driver, who was fast, efficient, and professional, said "I don't start until 9:30, they're supposed to call someone else. " My guess is that they've lost their overnight contractor, and didn't want to pay retail. It was a perfectly nice day, so it's not like theyd have been swamped with jumpstart calls.

This is kinda where I am too. Ive pretty much juiced my credit profile for everything it'll support for the time being. Now it's time to put a bunch of green OK's on my reports and go for another AOR next year.

Gonna be hard to keep up the AOR's though with AMEX no longer backdating. :(

Now that backdating is dead, app o ramas are going to have to be few and far between. You're probably better off just apping here and there, not in a spree.
