My Next Card

Postby darkguy2 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:03 pm

So I am looking at getting my next credit card and am not sure which one to get. The main reason for getting a new one is to get the 0% offer and maybe some signup bonuses. My Costco card will also most likely be closing anyways.

I will need to go to summer school so I need a card to charge it to. I cannot get a federal loan for it and do not want to get another private one. I will be working full time over the summer so really I will have it paid off after a month or so. My funds are getting low and do not want to be at the point where I have less than $1000 left in case something happens.

You can see my current cards below and my latest scores. I should not have a problem getting any card I want. Thanks for any suggestions.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

There are numerous cards that offer rewards. For example: Amex Blue Cash - 0% interest for 15 months and cash back. In addition to this there are plenty others.

One of the questions that I have right now, while you do have a descent amount of limits, how is your utilization?
Main Cards:
Amex BCE
Amex Everyday
Bank of America Cash Rewards
Chase Freedom
Capital One Quicksilver
Citi Thank You Preferred

Spark Cash Back (Business), Amex Plum (Business)

Right now it is 7%, but it will still go lower next month. I was also thinking since I will be putting the $1500 charge for tuition on the new card I can use that to go towards spend requirements to get bonuses. I also already get 5% back on groceries from my Sallie Mae card so I do not see how that one can help me.

Ok, I asked about your utilization for a couple of reasons:

- High utilization can affect the outcome of new application
- Don't need to go deeper in debt

You seem to be good on all of that though. The card you choose is going to have to be a personal decision, what type of rewards are you looking for?

I was going to say Arrival+, but the old offer has expired. I don't know if a new one will be available, or if the card is being closed or having some major transformation.

It says on the website it has a 40,000 point bonus for $3K spend. The problem is that my current cards pretty much cover all of my needs. I have my CSP for travel and dining when I don't have 5%, my Freedom and Discover for the rotating categories, and Sallie Mae for gas/groceries/Amazon. Then my amex for Costco. It seems all of the cards with nice bonuses I either already have or they have AF. I would rather not get another one on top of my CSP while still in school.

It may just be an intermittent website issue, but some of the links within the Barclaycard website are saying the offer has expired.

Barclaycard website seems to constantly have issues. There's been many links that either don't work or work only half the time and it's been like that since I started with them a year ago.

Pathetic for such a large bank.

If you have the room on your Discover then see if they'll grant you a 0% offer if that's all you want. I requested an APR reduction and they offered a permanent APR reduction or another 0% offer.

That's a nice rotation you have there. and while you're still in school, impressive.
A lot of cards offer the 0% intro period with some sort of bonus. Amex ED does that plus 10k pts I think and could replace your Costco when it dies out, and gives you access to MR.
