Applying for Chase Marriott -- hard pull if I already have a Chase card?

Postby jcarte29 » Tue Apr 14, 2015 2:33 pm

I'm so super interested in the Chase Marriott, as my signature shows yah I have a CSP.

Could I log in to my Chase account and apply for the Marriott off a soft pull? Or will they automatically do a hard pull for a new app? Just curious.

Any card app through Chase will be a HP sadly. I love my Chase Marriott, but then again I love Marriott branded hotels so it only makes sense to have the card. Plus its metal and gets a fair number of complements when used. Anyway of course i'd say apply if you can afford the HP, but without a better picture of overall credit history I can't say for certain. Hi fellow North Carolinian xD

I don't know who I'm trying to kid, I can probably afford the HP and it's my nerves getting the best of me LOL. Especially since I just got a Discover IT last month (and Barclay did a HP for my CLI last month as well). But if my count is correct I have only had 5 HPs in the past 6 months at most.

North Carolina is awesome, and glad to have a fellow Carolinian in the forum. Based off your screen name, I take it you vacation at OBX frequently or live in those parts?

I just thought about this, are the rewards transferable between the Marriott I'm interested in and the CSP I already have? I do like the idea of adding a second Signature VISA too...

Yes the nerves regarding HPs get all of us xD
Yes I do frequently travel over to the OBX, quite a nice area. Would be great to live there but the hurricane threat/high cost of living overall isn't worth the spectacular views to me.

Regarding the transfer ability of rewards. I don't think you can transfer rewards from Marriott to CSP. I say you can't because during application you provide Marriott Rewards number and all points you make off transactions go directly into your MR account. The reward points here don't sit in a "bank" on the chase website, like the Freedom or CSP where the points sit and add up online. The MR points go right to MR account at the end of the month. Still, with that aside having another Visa Signature would be nice. I have two I think. NFCU and Marriott.

Great info, thanks. One othe question, do I need to sign up for Marriott rewards prior to the CC app? (I did this back in august with US Airways, a month prior to applying for the Mastercard, not sure if that had any effect, positive or negative, on my approval).

I doubt it will have any merit regarding approval. However, if you don't have a Marriott Rewards account it is my understand one will be created for you upon signup. So you can....if you want....if you don't want to don't. Either way should have no merit on approval. If you do decide to apply please let me know the outcome.

5 HPs in the past 6 months is a lot. Chase will definitely look at that. I wouldnt be surprised if they put your application on pending status until either they contact you or you contact them.
If you're applying to the Marriort Rewards card, you should sign up for their Marriot program before applying although I dont know if it's necessary. I have the Hyatt card and since it's co-branded, they need Hyatt to populate the account number after linking to the Hyatt acct. I imagine if I didnt have one, they would just make one for me (but i would recommend creating one).

Marriott is a great card for:
1. People with very predictable travel plans that are confident they'll be staying at a Cat 1-4 (or 1-5 after the first year) Marriott within a 6-month timeframe most years. For me, those restrictions are a bit too much.
2. People who stay at Marriott properties frequently and can really benefit from elite status. By this, I mean Gold or above.

I really have to wonder if this card would be nearly as popular as it is for everyday spending if it wasn't black and made of metal. Marriott points just so rarely have a decent cent-per-point value. I don't see what's so exciting about automatic Silver status with the card - it's at Gold where the real benefits begin. And to go from the status the card starts with all the way to Gold would require $105,000, or 35 qualifying nights, or some combination thereof each year.

Booking through the Marriott website with a CSP, you can get 10 Marriott points and 2 UR points per dollar. With the Marriott card and Silver status, I think you get either 17 or 18 Marriott points (I'm not sure if the 20% bonus applies to the 5 points from the Marriott card, too.) Unless the URs are used for a great Hyatt room or United flight, the Marriott points are probably going to be worth more - but not that much more - and that's spending at the hotel itself (not everyday spending).

For all other spending (non-travel as well as non-Marriott travel) there are many cards can easily crush Marriott in reward value.

I like Marriott hotels, but I'd rather pay with a CSP.
