New site how-to's: Finding your way around

Postby CreditCardGuru » Fri Apr 10, 2015 12:52 pm

Important new information and details (including screen shots of our new look) are below…

As you've probably noticed, we've just launched our site re-design. Our new look makes our site mobile-responsive and adds a few new features we hope you'll find useful. We're still fixing some issues -- and if you encounter any problems, please send a private message to the CreditCardGuru account.

Here's what you need to know:

-You will NOT need to re-register. Your status (whether you're a "Green, Gold, Platinum or Centurion" member) will be preserved, as will your post count, avatar and signature. We have heard from some users who are having trouble logging in, and we're looking into the issue. In the meantime, using the "lost password" feature and re-setting your password seems to be a quick fix.

-If you'd like to give us feedback after the re-design, please contact us directly. If you have suggestions, or if you encounter problems post-migration, please send a private message to the CreditCardGuru account. We will be checking this account frequently and quickly respond to any issues.

-Very little should change in how you start threads or post responses. In fact, we think it will take very little time to get used to our new look. To ease the transition, though, here are a few screen shots showing the new location of some important and popular features:

1. On a laptop/desktop, you will now log in from the top right of the page:

On a mobile device, you'll log in at the top of the screen:

2. To see new posts/threads added since your last log in, click on "New posts" below the CCF banner:

On the mobile site, you'll tap this icon:

You can also view unanswered posts (threads with 0 responses) and unread posts (threads that you haven't read all the way through).

3. To manage your signature, avatar and other profile details, click on "User Control Panel" in the top right of the screen (top of the screen on mobile):

Image

... then click on "Profile" to display all the customization options:

4. To send private messages, click "Private messages" in the top right (top on mobile), near the login/logout area:

Image

Then just fill in the message fields. With the new system, it's important to click the "Add" button after you type in the recipient's name. If you don't do so, the message won't send after you click "submit:"

Image

5. Change your settings to receive new private messages when your inbox is full: If your inbox is full, you won't be able to receive new messages, unless you change the default setting. To do so, navigate to the "private msg" screen, then select "rules, folders & settings." At the bottom, fill in the bubble for "delete oldest messages." Then hit the "Change" button.

If you'd like detailed instructions for any other features, please respond to this thread, or send our team a private message at the CreditCardGuru account.

Thanks for your patience as we improve the site. The combined expertise and helpfulness of our CreditCardForum community is invaluable – and that's one thing we don't want to change.

Thanks Guru!

The site is pretty quick and smooth as is. It's certainly always been faster for me to navigate here than other forums I'm on.

The only issue I've ever had is the notifications for new PM's. They don't always work or popup when I have a new message. It's just random.

I've noticed this too. I have to make it a point to go to settings>inbox to check for new messages, due to lack of consistent notifications. In the new system, your inbox (and how many new PMs you have) will be visible from the front page of the forum. And, in our tests, the notifications for PMs have worked consistently.

Yes, the PMs have been an issue for me too, I don't always get notifications.

Also, hope you are adding a "like" or some such button for acknowledging a good post!

We will be converting to a new forum software platform which should solve the slow PM notification issue right out of the box. We are also looking in to adding a like and/or thank you button for acknowledging good posts as well. Thanks for the feedback - we will be issuing an update early next week so stay tuned.

Thanks for the heads up. Compared to other forums this one was really smooth so far but improving accessibility is always good.

Only thing I noticed is that we have less emoticons/smiley's than I've seen in other places.

Looking forward to the change. I've never really been much of a fan of vBulletin and have usually preferred IPB (Invisionboard). Thank you for all your hard work. Despite my few posts, I am here habitually every week for updates.

I hope with this change that the limits on how many private messages you can have in your inbox can be removed. That's the only thing that really annoyed me about the site. There were times where I really needed to send a message to someone only to find their inbox full, including CreditCardGuru himself. It always sucked having to delete old ones just to be able to receive more messages, etc.

Thanks so much for bringing this up, and apologies for anyone who hasn't been able to reach me due to a full inbox.

While the current limits will still apply in the immediate future, the new system adds the option of adjusting your settings, so that you can receive new messages even when your inbox is full. When this setting is selected, instead of messages bouncing back, the oldest message in the inbox will be deleted to make room for the new message. This setting will easy to find in the new version -- under "rules and settings" on the private message page.

The CreditCardGuru account will have this setting, so that all messages sent to me get through.
