I might try that - although after some further thought, I'm not sure if it would be better to do that before, while, or after I apply for an Arrival+ in about a month. I could probably use the extra limit on Arrival+, rather than Sallie Mae.

jcarte29 wrote:Well I tried, but didn't do a well enough job of convincing them. They said I gotta wait 3 months before askin for a CLI. They gave me a $2,500 line.

I am a bit surprised. Still, though, you can transfer most of the balance.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

jcarte29. Since your Quicksilver does not have any additional benefits, try calling Capital One and doing a product change on the card.

This may seem like a "rookie question" coming from someone of a seasoned vet on this subject, but would a product change mean closing that quick card out, opening a new one, thus risking a score drop from closing one account and opening another?

Or could it all be the same account number, just different card?

When you do a product change everything stays the same (account number, credit start date, etc...) They would just change the card type and send out a new card.

Doing this with most lenders is fairly easy and only takes a few minutes. I have actually done this with about 3 of my cards (2 capital ones and 1 chase). With Capital 1 you can either call in or log in and use the chat screen.

So I just attempted to contact Cap One (first through chat, then over phone). Very disappointed they gave me same response I received last summer, the last time I tried this (I've kept transcripts of all my contact with them).

According to them, they had no offers they could fulfill to product change my entry quicksilver to a venture. So I asked to speak with the first reps boss. Got on with him, graciously explained the same situation (including that I make more than twice now than when I originally got the card in 2010, with Sears at the time). Still no dice. So I asked to speak to the next supervisor.

The best he could offer was a reduction of my interest rate, from 24.99 to 18.99 (peanuts if you ask me) and couldn't process a CLI without me going through services tab on the website login, which I did (although I wasn't happy about this consolation "offer")Of course came back with a pending decision and they would let me know in two to three business days blah blah, thanks but no thanks I'm guessing.

So the guy I'm working with says he's the last point of contact, there was no one above him for me to be transferred to after I asked to speak to someone else. I said unless he's the CEO of Capital One I'm quite sure there is a supervisor of his, so that's when I got on the phone and off chat.

I'm ready to cut this card up when/if I get the "thanks but no thanks" notification in a couple days. But at least I let them know how I felt. You could say I cussed them out without uttering a single cuss word lol (mainly cause I was in my office at the time of this circus).

Sorry to hear that they are giving you so much trouble. When I called them both times it seemed to be easy. If you are really wanting to do something about it, find the number for the executive office and call them up. Otherwise, if you want to cancel, cancel.

I appreciate that. I'm not going to sweat it, I'll continue to keep it in the drawer until the AF is due (I think it's next month anyways), then I'll call to either get the AF waived or I'll cancel it then.

A late response came in from Amex007 as I was writing this, and I agree with him as well lol.

And another edit of note (makes Cap One seem really stingy): my anger with Cap One might have led to a fearlessness to just say F-It and apply for the Marriot Card I've been wanting LOL, and was instantly approved. My Marriot membership now has two nice Chase cards to utilize with it.

Congrats on the Marriot Card. I do agree with Amex007 to a point. It will have to be a personal preference for you on what you decide to do. Yes, Capital One can be stingy on CLI's, but that is somewhat to be expected with them (they give credit cards to almost everyone). Do you care about your AAOA, will it even make a difference? Based on what I can tell from the accounts that you have, you are not really limited on lines of credit, but I could be wrong. Will it hurt your utilization? There are many factors to consider when deciding to cancel a card or not. Me personally, I don't believe that the AF is a lot, correct? That being said, it is possible that you can get it waived. Also, you can try back every couple of months to try to do a product change.

I have cancelled cards myself, but it was because of the card/limit/af associated with them. I had to rebuild my credit about 10 years ago and had a few cards that were just useless altogether. I decided to keep my Capital One accounts (as I now have 4), because I had a couple of cards that Capital One bought from another bank.

Whatever you decide to do should be based on all factors, not just because they turned you down for something. If you do that based on a feeling at a specific moment, you could regret it later. If you do decide to keep it and really want the other card, you could apply for it, and if approved, ask capital one to roll your limit over.
