I don't have anything "impressive" (a card's material and design wouldn't factor into my applying for it), but I've gotten the most comments on the Amex ED...the design of which seems to disgust the tiny niche of people that are credit card enthusiasts. I'm happy enough with the design, but I personally like my Discover it better (currently carrying the copper version). Believe it or not it's gotten a couple remarks, but not nearly as many as the ED.

I worked at McDonald's through high school and college, so I've encountered countless credit cards. That was before I paid much attention to them, though, so I've probably seen cool ones and never noticed them. I think the vast majority of people don't really care at all about cards (outside of the few that have even heard of the Centurion and waitresses gunning for tips).

This is the coolest looking card I own. Looks like a transparent circuit board.

It's just plastic.

Except the amount gold and palladium in the Palladium card is negligible. The $1000 cost for the card is a myth.

The nicest looking card I've got is my NHL Discover IT card. I got a compliment the first time I used it. But like others have said, the looks don't really matter its the benefits of using the card that counts.
Kohls: $300, Discover IT: $1.8k, Capital One Quicksilver: $2k, Amazon Store Card: $2.2k, Chase Freedom Unlimited: 3.2k, AMEX HHonors 5k
