Have you ever gone to an ATM machine, swiped your card, and gotten a screen message saying the ATM machine was out of service - to try again later? It could be a legit message. Then again, it could be that the ATM machine has been compromised by an identity thief. In some cases, I've heard that some identity thieves "buy" their own ATM machines - placing them in high traffic areas for the sole purpose of gleaning pin numbers and info off the card's magnetic stripe. Afterward, they "make" their own card that's a "clone" of the original card - and use it for nefarious purposes.
