February 2015 Garden Club/Garden Cult Thread

Postby popamode72 » Sat Jan 31, 2015 11:33 pm

If you've been here long enough, then you know the drill. If not, here's a basic synopsis on what the purpose of these threads are for.

Over at a certain website in which some CCF members here have been exiled from, gardening is a way of life and a dogma that should never be questioned under any circumstances. You must never speak badly about or criticize the garden way ever. Never take HPs for anything as they are worse than forgetting how to breathe, not even CLIs or you'll be kicked out and shamed in public. If you ever dare get out of the garden for anything at all, consider your life to be completely over and your shiny Gold spade or Bronze spade or whatever spade or seedling you have to be history too. Grab some Kool-Aid and popcorn and take part in this ultra sacred ritual too. The thread is open to discussing all sorts of things related to the mighty garden as well as other credit card related matters on your mind.

With me personally, every time I seriously want to take a break from cards, there's always some good CC offer that comes out so it's unrealistic for me to even think about taking a really long term break from it, though I think I really wanted to, I could try doing a couple of months. I have also gotten cards with a bunch of the prime lenders that I've always wanted to have cards with, despite one of them (Citi, cough cough) turning on me last month, though at this point, I don't think it's been too much of a loss anymore and I don't miss them in the slightest either. I actually feel a lot better without them at this point and don't want to dwell in the past when it comes to that issue. The experience taught me to never marry your cards and to always have alternatives available in case one lender decides to screw me over and to especially be much more careful when it comes to applying for even store cards from the same lender I might already have a card with.

Checking in for the cult.

I am out of the garden. Recently I was approved for Citi ThankYou Premier, so I should be able to transfer all my points on Forward elsewhere. Used the pre-approved application and APR is hefty 22.99% immediately, and credit limit is $5000.

Meanwhile, my Citi Forward got a CLI so the limit went from 3.5k to 5k. Moreover, since Discover has made some improvements on their CLI page, I was able to get into that page without the "sorry, we are unable to process CLI online, please call blah blah blah" message, and was approved a $2500 CLI without an inquiry.

I am sorry about the adverse actions Citi has taken on you. FWIW, they do suck, even though it looks like I am sticking to them (their rewards system). My first, ever, contact to their EO was not as smooth as I expected. Because my Forward had $5k limit, I made a phone call to them and ask if they could change the card to Visa Signature. They told me I have to apply for another product that is Visa Sig, and my card cannot be upgraded. Even mentioning some people have done the conversion didn't work. They basically told me a Signature version is not available. When mentioning that I do have seen photos of a Visa Signature Forward, still no avail. During that time I felt like they are doing nothing more than reading scripts, like "you have to apply for a new card and get qualified", "if you want to convert, we can close your account and let you apply for a new one", something like that. They insisted there was no option when reviewing my account, and the "Signature card" is a different type of product, and "we offer a variety of card products" or so. By the end, I asked "so there are two different versions of Citi Forward, and the version I am having is not eligible?", and they said "right". Waste of time, for real.

I am glad you finally kind of got out from them and are able to seek for something more valuable (at least not wasting life). For me? Still thinking about how to complete the sign-up bonus while not yet received my card...

The only card that interests me when it comes to Citi really would have to be their Double Cash card and I had tried numerous times before to get them to PC my Forward to that and not even their EO could help me there, so I wasted several EX HPs trying to get it. When I tried to get them to pull another bureau like TU or EQ which both have a lot less recent inquiries, they kept saying no. Their customer service tended to be all over the map too, and probably the worst by phone, which most of the people I've talked to there were complete numbskulls by far and could barely speak English a lot of the time.

The most insulting thing they told me though is that the EO gave me some BS about how they can't look into reopening any of my accounts yet because of the CARD Act and because I'm not 21 yet either and blatantly told me to just apply for another card right after they approved me for a third card from them and then decided to shut down all of my accounts. Being a Citi customer for close to a year and a half (technically closer to two years because of my checking account) didn't seem to make any difference to them either. Really, I'm just gonna get a Fidelity Amex (which comes with 2% cashback on everything, CapOne Quicksilver might either get closed or completely SDed if I got this) instead later this year given how good BoA has been with me and how easy they've been work with. I have a feeling when I have much more history with them, I'll be more likely to be golden for that one.

I'm just glad it wasn't Chase or Amex that decided to do this to me. Barclays and Discover even stepped up to the plate with some SP CLIs after this happened too. Recently over at MF, someone had gotten their accounts closed by Chase but they seemed a lot more flexible to work with and even offered to reopen the accounts in a few months.

No apps (or plans for them) since CSP in late January.

Synchrony Brooks Bros went up $300 to $1,560. Still my lowest limit, but actually my first auto CLI on any card. I haven't used it since I was doing Christmas shopping, so it looks like regular activity is not a requirement for a CLI with Synchrony.

Just to add a data point, my experience with Synchrony has been the same. I got 2 CLIs late last year (albeit at my my request) on cards that were well over a year old each. Both saw very little use after I moved on to Discover (speaking of which, my first anniversary with them will be tomorrow IIRC).

I am in the garden for now at least. I was originally going to apply for the Sallie Mae in March (to have after Discover's gas quarter ends), but the wife and I have been talking a bit more seriously about when we're going to purchase our first house. No definite plans yet, but I may be staying in the garden as a precaution. 6-12 months is a lot of lead time to leave.

Having applied for the Diners Club Premier card in late 2014 and receiving a very generous credit limit, I am now permanently in the garden...for the remainder of my life. $194K in credit limits is certainly enough, since I'm using less than 1% of that. Retiring this year and actually consolidating some of my accounts, perhaps closing others since I'll have no need for multiple balance transfer cards. It's been a great ride, from the 500s to the 800s, now's the time to enjoy life and not worry as much about credit scores.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!

I just got a CLI on my Amazon Store card today.

Called Credit Solutions and asked for $10k after their chat online told me to do that, they countered with a CL of $6k. My last CLI on that card was a few months ago and I had let three statements generate. That card I've had for over 10 months now and the initial limit on it was just $600 so it's grown nicely overtime. On average, I've only charged anywhere between $30-100 on the card at a time and have PIF on that.

Also tried seeing if I was eligible for another CLI on one of my Amex cards and got the 7-10 day message. I'm just gonna assume that was denied since my limit on the card I requested the increase on hasn't changed. It's been six months since my last request.

This month and last month have been where I've seen a lot of CLIs on several of my accounts, even with Discover and Barclays. Wells Fargo also really surprised me this month too, filling in the void that Citi left basically and more.

In the garden for now but who knows.

Is something about the Venture's terms changing? Or it's just particularly loved or hated right now?

Maybe they just want big limits, and turned to discover that Cap One tends to give high CL on Venture.
