As far as I'm concerned, they could close the Green and Gold cards (although they are a cash cow for Amex), and turn the Costco TrueEarnings into something that gives more than 1% on warehouse purchases. What is the point of offering a cobranded card that gives only 1% cash back at that very merchant? Drop the 3% on Costco gas and offer 2% on gas and warehouse stuff.

I hope CapOne gets easier to get CLIs from this year. Their reputation isn't going to be turned upside down overnight, I know, but just a thought.

And I'm quite hopeful as well that Amex will come out with something amazing this year to compensate for the losses.

One other prophecy I failed to mention here.

The 31 day 3x CLI becoming the new norm with Amex and possibly less FRing this year too. I keep seeing people achieve CLIs with Amex before the 61 day mark now and not just during the holidays either. I'd love to see where this will go.

Hell will freeze over before that happens. Too many people carry those cards, plus the cards themselves are ingrained into the very fiber and history of AmEx. It would be like the United Kingdom eliminating the monarchy (outdated concept - but valuable to the UK due to tourists and history/nostalgia buffs embracing everything royal).

No, I like it the way it is right now. Remember, it isn't just 3% back at Costco gas, it's 3% back at gas at any stand-alone gas stations too, plus 2% on travel and restaurants, including Costco travel purchases. I wouldn't want anything that would mess up these bonus structures.

The Costco warehouse prices are set to be low already, and Costco makes the vast majority of its profit from the membership fees.

Amex also does this with other partners. The Gold Delta Skymiles card does not earn you extra miles for purchasing a ticket from Delta, for example. Although the SPG card itself earns 2 starpoints per dollar spent on Starwood hotels - 2x on travel is hardly unique for Amex.

Not trying to sound... hmm... anti-religious or knock his family faith by any means, but if someone would have asked me to guess his religion, JW would have been my first guess. Interesting that "DS" chose to get a card tied to a Mormon hotel. Typically JW's and Mormons are the bloods and crips of the cult world (using cult in the sense of "high commitment faith"). They don't get along at all.

That's true. I'm not used to thinking of it as 3% cash back on gas everywhere. With Sallie Mae (and Freedom and Discover) I would never use the TrueEarnings for gas at a place other than Costco. I think most people don't want a complicated set of credit cards, and it is a reasonable all-around option for someone who just wants 2 or 3 cards.

2% on travel and dining is a little something extra, but even a no-AF Arrival can beat that with slightly over 2% on those categories. I have not purchased travel through Costco, though, so there may be offers there I'm not familiar with. That 2% on Costco travel might be like the 3% on Costco gas - only the TrueEarnings Amex gives the bonus - any other Amex network card would treat it as a general warehouse purchase.

I certainly agree that Costco is in the business of keeping prices low for all customers, and not playing pricing games a lot. I like that. They don't have the complicated mess of competing coupons and incompatible savings that some other stores have.

It I got a TrueEarnings and also a Fidelity, ED or EDP, it would just feel a little out of place to only use the TrueEarnings for gas there.

Maybe I will pick up a TE before too long. The Amex website does make it pretty easy to manage multiple cards, and I hope/expect the TE is no exception.
