Usually, when recommending cards, I tend to nudge people in the direction of the Sallie Mae card (5% each on the first $250 spent on groceries and gas, and also the first $700 on books (hint: amazon.com). That would probably make your BoA cash card much less valuable(although if you spend a lot on gas/groceries it could be a good overflow card). I would also consider the Chase Freedom because it seems the Freedom and Discover It don't overlap this year, so the two cards compliment each other well.

Other than that, I can't give you much else without knowing more about spending.
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

Thanks Otter I like your ideas of the Freedom and the Sallie Mae. I am not really concerned with my spending habit though even though I do love the gas 5%. I was just wondering what most individuals would do to improve the line up if it were there line up. I assume some may say five cards are enough.

If you understand the former then you should understand that the latter isn't relevant and you need to give us info to help you find cards suited to you. I wouldn't have your lineup because it would make no sense for my spend and priorities. Presumably you selected your lineup because of your situation (and if not then you need to reassess your strategy) and we need those details to determine where you're trying to go and what would suit you.

What are you looking for in a card? What's deficient with your current lineup? If you're looking to maximize rewards then what are your major spend categories and how much volume are you running through them?

You can't rely on consensus to answer your question. You need to look at your specific situation, needs/wants, goals, etc and use that to determine which cards suit you.

Thanks Takeshi, I guest my question was more generic and hard to answer. My spending habits go more into gas because I am on the road alot and I do a lot of dinning out. I very rarely do any grocery shopping. I vacation about twice a year (Vegas love it). I guess if you asked me what I was looking for in my next card I would want a great dinning card with a low AF cash back/rewards.

Apart from the Discover, your cards offer pretty unexciting rewards - especially for a light grocery shopper.

I would definitely consider a CSP for travel and dining, and also a Freedom to add fuel to it. Sallie Mae could be good for gas, if you don't mind the $250 gas spending cap for the 5%. I tend to exceed the $250 grocery cap often and am considering a switch to EDP to avoid monitoring the limit. Of course, I'd start monitoring swipes, but that's easier to do from home.

If I was going to Vegas twice a year, I would look into airline and hotel-specific cards, too.

This Sallie Mae Rewards MC looks like the **** with 5% back on gas and groceries. It was totally unnecessary to apply for an AMEX BCE.

It's good, just don't exceed the monthly caps. Monthly caps are a bigger pain than quarterly ones. If you buy a lot of groceries and can't make good use of MR points, then it's good. BCE is nice for groceries over $250.

I hope everyone activated their 5% on their Chase Freedom and other 5% cash back cards. It's such bull that they make you sign up for it to get the 5% eligibility--and, if you don't only reward you 1%.

I'm taking the opposite approach this year, I've reduced my card profile and focusing on travel rewards. Looking to do a big trip next year. :-)

Once I take the trip I may make a change or two. Odds are I'll probably change the Ritz-Carlton card to something else (although I do love the card and the customer Service - I'll probably switch it to the CSP) because having the Amex Platinum and the Ritz are a bit redundant.

I could kill the Platinum, but my employer uses Amex cards so it makes sense for me to put a lot of my eggs in Amex's basket.
