What was the first card to give you a $10,000+ credit limit?

Postby kcm7 » Tue Dec 16, 2014 2:44 pm

I know that nothing is guaranteed, so this is more of a curiosity thing than an advice thing ... but what was the first card to give you a credit limit over $10k? And what was your credit picture like at the time?

The highest limit I've been given is $6,500, and I'm excited for the day that a bank trusts me with more than a $10k limit.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

The highest limit I've been given was 2,000 from Discover. But the highest limit I have now is 4,750 from 1FBUSA, it started out at 250 the summer of 2011.
Cards:
1FBUSA: 5.75k
Discover IT (for students): 4.6k
Chase Freedom (signature): 5k
Target REDcard: 1.5k
AmEx BlueCash Everyday: 5.5k

FICOs:
TU - 785 (December 2015)

Amex was my first, and it only happened in late October. I included my wife's income in the application (which I am sure helped with the CL), but only after asking a CSR about it to make sure doing so was kosher. Coincidentally, my highest limit at the time was also $6,500 (with Discover).

My TU FICO at the time was 756. My credit profile is pretty well detailed in my signature (with a couple CLIs since I got the card, also noted below). The only other debt of any kind is a car laon I've had since May. I was VERY pleased with that limit!

FICO-8:
EX - 809 (11/16) | TU - 803 (11/16)
Primary Cards:
American Express EveryDay - $20,000 (10/14)
Discover it - $23,000 (2/14)
AU on Barclay Sallie Mae - $10,000 (8/15)
plus several store accounts of varying usefulness now

I had actually started rebuilding six months before(after staying away from credit for around 8-9 years) and the latest buzz at the myFICO boards was the OCCU Duck and Beaver cards. They were giving obscene limits in some cases way above the limits others were giving. I applied and was given 10k when my previous high was 5k on a Pay Pal MC (which was way above everything else I had at the time).

Most people here know the OCCU story... they overextended themselves, got scared, told people there was a "possible security breach" on their account and closed a bunch of the cards and changed the terms so only people in their footprint could get a card. I survived the cut somehow...
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

American Express True Earnings, just a couple of months ago. In fact, it's sits at exactly $10,000 CL right now, as my highest limit card. My next closest is my Discover at $8500, followed by, believe it or not, a Cap One QS Visa at $6,000. Next year I am going to be focusing on soft pulls to bring up other limits (I'll be going around for SPs from Amex and Discover too, of course). I have 2 Citi Mastercards (DC and Diamond Preferred), both of which I would like to see above $5,000, and my Orbitz Visa (Comenity), which I also want to see above $5000. Basically, my goal next year will be to take no HPs and use SPs to bring all my CLs to above 5K.

Chase gave me $10K when I first applied several years ago for the Sapphire Preferred. Merrill Lynch gave me $15K when I got the Total Merrill card and immediately PC'd to the Merrill+ card. When I did the PC, they asked me if $15K was enough! It was. First card to move me from less than, to $10K was Lowes. Started me off low, around $3K IIRC, and moved me up the ladder with multiple increases. Same thing happened with Discover, started me at $3600, moved to over $11K through the years, some auto-CLI.
Retired, and in the process of retiring cards!
EQ = 846 EX=828 TU = 836 as of 02/2016

Nothing yet but I am planning on going for Diners Club next year if their applications ever open up again so there's a possibility I might get 10K from that. My highest CL has been 5K thus far and it took me nearly a year to get to that point.

Nothing for now. Potential future cards include Chase CSP, Citi TY Preferred & Premier, Amex Everyday and maybe others, but won't expect anyone to be over 10k. Likely won't app for several months and just maintain my current CL's.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

My BCP was the first to Auto CLI over $10K. Received the card with a $5.5k limit in Mar 2013, Auto CLI to $8.5k after 6 months, Auto CLI to the current $11.5k another 3 months later.

The second was the Chase Disney card. Received the card in Apr 2014 with a 7k limit. Auto CLI 6 months later to current $11.5k.

Only other card was my recently received CSP which was approved in Nov 2014 at an opening $14k limit.

My FICOs have consistently been in the low- to mid-700s during this period.
AmEx - Platinum (NPSL) , Blue Cash Preferred ($19,000), Gold Delta Skymiles ($8,500)
Chase - Sapphire Preferred ($14,000), Disney ($11,500), Amazon.com ($9,000), Freedom ($8,000)
CapOne - QuickSilver ($7,250) / Platinum Rewards ($7,250)
